I was checking the oil wieght for my first oil change on my 2008 and was surprised to see recomended was 5-20. This seems thin for the desert and was thinking of sticking with 10-30 Mobil 1. We dont go up to the snow very often but should still be ok in the cold
Does anyone see a problem with this?

I just talked with several service managers from Yuma and El Centro. They all said stick with the 5-20. They said that it lubricates better based on the closer tolerances in the engine compared to those of the past. Additionally, the cooling system should do what it is supposed to do so oil weight is not as critical as some seem to think.

I changed my oil today. 5W-20 Mobile 1.

It's your Jeep. If you don't want to follow the recommendations then use it. I’m sure many will reply here that they use 10-30 or 5-30 or whatever.

I have been running 5w 30 Mobil 1 for about 50,000 miles in the 95 plus heat of Florida and my Jeep runs great on and off the trail. The dealer down here is even switching to it from 5w 20 like the books said to us.

If 5W20 is what the engine calls for, 5W20 is what I'd use. The oil has been tested, it works in all climates, does a fine job of cooloing and protecting the engine, and is what is required to maintain the warranty. Use it with no worries.

Just bought oil for my daughters 2011 miata and it's 0-20! Feels more like antifreeze sloshing around in the container. I was thinking the same thing about it being to thin and I hope they engineered and built the tolerances so close. Would hate to shorten the engines life span just so these vehicles can make their govt mandated MPGs. I had an 85 new camaro with the 2.8 that everyon was spinning bearings in back then. It caled for 5w-30 and i broke it in with that and then ran Mobil 1 10-30 and put 140k on it before i sold it and it was using the same amount of oil then as it did new.Maybe it was due to the synthetic that I had no problem or the weight or a combo of both. Put a pressure gauge on it and try it with both oils under your normal driving conditions and see what the results are. As long as you have 10psi for each 1000 rpms you are fine.

If you have an engine failure and your running anything besides the recommended oil they CAN deny the claim. If you change you own oil make sure you save the receipts for oil and filters and document the mileage too

:whistling: My 1993 Corvette LT1-recommended MOBILE ONE 5w-20, so thats what I used-

It was a high rpm small block Chebby=

So after MANY 4x4s/corvettes in between then and 2008, when I got the JKUR-

I ran the stock jeep oil, till 1100 miles, then switched to Mobile One 5w-30-

My jeep lives in the Nv desert and thats my story and I'm sticking toit-
