31s are fine with dana 35.. preatty much the biggest tires people here will recomend to you is 33s with D35 diff.. anything over 33 is pushing it and it may snap an axle but again you gotta drive smart as kingvm said and you may be okay, lockers for anything over 33s are also a no no.

I'm Running 33's on a Dana 35 unlocked. I have beat on mine pretty hard and so far so good. I won't be locking that axle with the 33's just to be safe. You should be fine with 31's, but I wouldn't trust a locked Dana 35 with any tires. Just my Paranoia creeping in on me again:).

I know this is gonna sound stupid but what is the difference between locked and unlocked?
there is no stupid questions :)

locked and unlocked refers to the differential type, locked diff will make the tires to spin at same speeds with everything its got. Now this can be good in slippery areas where traction is needed. Stock dana 35 is open and some have limited slips.. preatty much for on road use you want open or limited slip because its tough to steer if both rear tires turn at the same speed :) For offroad use you'd want somekind of locker because imagine one of your tires is up in the air.. this tire will start spinning while the rest wont feel power going to them so all the power is wasted through the one tire in the air.

here read some of this stuff.. it will help you and expain it better than i will

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential.htm

there are like 8 pages with usefull stuff.. if you dont feel like reading look at whatever diagrams they have such as on page 3 - open diffs, i didnt see any lockers diagrams..

preatty much people say you should stay away from dana 35 lockers with bigger tires because the axle shafts are preatty soft and can brake when the force of nearly 2 tires is aplied to it.. by force of 2 tires i'm saying one tire has no traction or may be in the air while the other one is strongly on the ground so because of the locker the one tire on the ground will get some rough torque aplied to it.
