Ive had my jeep for awhile now and when i bought it, it came without a spare, so i need to get a tire carrier soon(as well as tire), but i want one thats not expensive as i dont have tons of money and that has a spot to mount gas cans and a jack on it. So any help on finding one would be great!!

FloridaTJ, you need to tell us what size tire you need to carry. You should have a spare that is the same diameter (but not necessarilly the same width) as the other four tires. Some of the least expensive tire carriers are limited to 35" tires.

Also, do you have a stock rear bumper, or aftermarket, and if aftermarket, which one? Some aftermarket bumpers allow you to retrofit a tire carrier. That can be hundreds of $ cheaper than buying a tire carrier with bumper.

Off all the swing out tire carrier/bumpers I have looked at on Jeeps, I never liked how all the weight of an oversize tire is concentrated on one pivot point. Even on the best of the best, or the over-built carrier that my buddy made for his Jeep.

I am a fan of the tub mounted tire carriers. They are not for everyone. You have to drill holes in your Jeep.

I would of liked to have the ORFab carrier that can hold cas cans, but settled on the less expensive Bestop tub mounted carrier. So far, no complaints after two wheeling seasons. I did replace the provided hardware with non painted grade 8 stuff at the hardware store before I ever mounted it. (a nice tip I received from a certain LJ owner on these forums.:) )
I like the Bestop because it works with the tailgate as one unit.

Just a suggestion. I guess you could fab up some sort of hi lift jack mount to it. But, my jack ended up living in the garage. I have never needed it after years of wheeling. It did come in handy once lifting the bed of my pickup on one side so I could get in there and replace the fuel pumps.

I am interested in a tub mount. My Jeeperman bumper wobbles back and forth while I drive. So much so that the metal in the frame crossmember is fatiguing. One question though, does it lock in the open position or will it swing shut when the Jeep is off camber?

^ it will swing freely, although there is a little more resistance than just a tailgate with a tire on it, or a swing away carrier. At least on mine anyway.

The Hi-Lift will mount quite simply to the right of the tire on the Bestop tire carrier, using two inexpensive U-bolts that go around the carrier and through the holes on the HiLift, cost about $4 total.

TJDave, depending on the width of your spare, you may also be able to get two 4-gallon RotoPax gas cans between your tire carrier and tailgate. I used to do that with a 30" spare, allowing the gas containers to rest on the stock bumper, suitably padded with a rag.

The Bestop was one of the less expensive designs I was going to reccomend to the OP.

The install of the Bestop tire carrier is lengthy but not difficult. The great thing about it is that once installed and adjusted, just unlock and open your tailgate, and the tire swings away with it, no seperate lock/latch or attention required. This is a major convenience for a daily driver Jeep.

Installation does require drilling holes, and if you have a Body Lift installed, you will have to cut and lengthen the bottom Bestop mount by welding in a piece of steel as long as your body lift. This allows the weight of the tire to rest on the rear frame cross member under the right rear body mount.

The major thing is: Are you SURE you are stopping at 35"? The weight of a 35" spare plus a wheel plus a HiLift is approaching the 200lb limit for the Bestop. You would have to sell it and replace it to go to 37" or larger.

I have used the Bestop for my 33x10.5x15s for ~7yrs. I have had to replace the little plastic washers (for lack of a better term), Bestop send me a whole set of replacement parts for free.

Exposure to salt air is slowly causing some surface rust..

Been pretty happy.
