I know that many times these words are oxy morons(cant have one if you have the other), but if it works for the Jumb Shrimps, it works for me:

take it to a shop. I lift up jeep, put jack stands under frame, that's important. don't want wheel off the ground, jeeps raised up just enough so the springs are not under load. take off u-bolts, remove spring eye bolts. that's pretty much it. I probably left something important out. may need to block tires if on a slope, hate it when my axles role away.

Don't worry...it can be done with a couple of jack stands and a good jack. If its rusty or old spray some PB Blaster on everything. Once you you lift one side it will relieve the "pressure" and you wil be able to work on each side as you go. I would recommend an air jack or cutting tool though.

i had to replace a spring on my yj. took my father and i about 6 hours (due to a bolt that WOULD NOT BUDGE). Make sure you have a propane torch, breaker bar, and a cheater bar. jack up the frame, and the axle. Take out the u bolts to release the pressure. Then take out the bolts through the bracket mounts. If you can't get them loose, spray some pb on them, heat them with the torch for about a minute, spray some more pb, let it cool, then heat it up one more time and have a go at it. Heat is a life saver with rusted parts. For installation, do the oppsite.
