One day I'll have my black TJ repainted, either myself or a shop. I'm wondering what the process is to paint match your fenders since they're plastic and obviously the jeep is not. Is the final paint/clear coat the same but the primer is different? Mine are faded like the rest of the world's and I think the paint matched fenders look 100x better.

since its black why not just hit them with some kyrlon fusion black. it makes them look brand new again and last for many years.

the rest of the worlds TJ's flares arent faded, just the ones that havent been maintained

I was looking at this jeep online and I think these fenders look great, I don't think the plastic paints will end up looking like this?

sahara and rubicons came with a smooth flare that was painted. all other TJ's came with textured flares that were flat black.

if you already have smooth flares then by all means, paint away, but if they are textured, they'll always have that textured look

Nope. The spray can route is good if you want the fenders to have the satin look (SEM trim or Krylon Fusion satin black). For a gloss finish to match the rest of the paint, the final result won't look good with a spray can.

My black Jeep came with fenders matched to the paint. Pros are that it looks good and won't fade quickly in the sun. One con I can think of is that if they get beat up by road debris/branches, repainting it won't be as easy as if you stuck with the plastic look.

I believe it was an option and not solely limited to Saharas and Rubicons. My LJ has it listed in the build sheet as "BLACK CLEAR COAT - Fender Flares." I've also seen other TJs with finishes matching the paint, but they're not as common.

Mine aren't faded and it's a 97. It's called maintenance. I think you'd need the smooth fiberglass ones to paint though. Somebody just sold a set on here this week for $100!

First they are flares not fenders... that should help if you try to search... the painted plastic flares were on rubicon, sahara, and some special editions such as my columbia edition... they are 1" wider than the standard textured black flares.... you can actually buy them but they are expensive... you can also sand your textured plastic flares smooth and paint them with correct automotive practices for plastic parts.

My LJ had paint matched fenders too, they are in my attic now.

I painted the textured ones that were on the TJ I had last June. I cleaned them up good, sprayed with a primer, sanded, sprayed with primer, sanded, sprayed with primer then painted and then clear coated. You can get "plastic bumper" auto repair paints that match really well that have the full kit of things you need.

Doing a lot of winter work on my TJ, new flares, opted to NOT paint them. IMHO scruffs are a lot easier to deal with on the plastic than on paint. A bit of green pad, a bit of trim paint and you are almost as good as new.

My 05 Rubicon had original Rubi flares on it. Mine were not painted. I have not seen any Rubi on the road in my travels that did not have the plain, unpainted, 1" wider, black plastic flares. If they are out there, it must be a fairly rare option or... Maybe people swapped factory Rubi flares for Sahara painted flares because they liked the way they looked.

They WERE the paintable flares tho weren't they? Smooth instead of textured

Exactly! Smooth black, unpainted.

I found a set of Xenon 6" flares with the same shape and profile as the OEM Rubicon flares on Craigslist for $140. I put the back ones on, which was soooo much fun (yea, right!), I decided to leave the OEM Rubicon flares on the front. Just to give my bloody knuckles a chance to heal...

I cleaned the fronts up and they looked so good I kept them that way. I really like the wider stance in the back with the Xenons and the slightly narrower flares over the front tires (33x12.5x15). Didn't plan it out that way, but it works for my liking.

The pebble finish flares are not intended to be painted. I am not sure how well the paint will hold up. One solution is to just buy a new aftermarket set or if they have never been painted, Mother's back to black will bring them back. If they are light grey, it make take some effort.

There is only one source for the Sahara/Rubicon wider flares and that is Mopar. They can be painted. When I had my Rubicon painted, I just sucked it up and ordered a new set of the Mopar flares. They are pricey. But damn, they look nice. They don't shine like paint but have a more soft sheen to them.
