I have a set of steering knuckles to install this weekend and I wondered if it was worth it to paint them for the sake of protecting the metal from turning to rust right away. I'm thinking a coat of etching primer rattle can with a black rattle over top coat. Obviously tape off the surfaces where the brake pads will install. Downside?

Don't paint inside the three tapered ball joint/TRE holes. I also recommend not painting the surface where the bearing hub makes contact with the outboard side of the steeering knuckle.

It's worth painting, taking care not to hit things you shouldn't noted above. A buddy replaced his, didn't paint them and a few weeks later they already looked like crap from surface rust.

I painted mine last winter after I sandblasted everything. Just give all the mounting surfaces a coat of grease then spray paint the whole thing. Once the paint is dry then wipe the grease away and you'll still have nice mounting surfaces for the balljoints, hubs, and tie rod ends.
