I hope I am on the right part of the forum. I am new to Jeeps!
I looked at a 2002 Jeep Wrangler, 4 Cylinder, 5 Speed yesterday.
It has 65,000 and is in MINT condition.
Underneath was spotless, body and softtop was perfect. I test drove it and the 4cyl, 5 speed was flawless.
Is there anything I should know about these?
I have always wanted one.
They seem to sale a ,lot of goodies for them for aftermarket. It drove nice and shifted smooth.
Oil was very clean. Does this year or model have any known issues?
Just doing my homework before I make a loan. Thanks a million!

I would recommend taking it up to a decent speed and seeing if it wobbles. I haven't experienced it but I have heard that some TJs have that issue.

Sounds like a nice Jeep but if you plan to drive it on the highway much, particularly if you have any hills or mountains in your area, I'd hold out for the 4.0L six cylinder engine. Around town & offroad, the 2.5L engine is worthy but on the highway, it is anemic. Especially if you envision your Jeep eventually running big tires at some point in its future. :)

Thanks guys. It is actually a back up vehicle for my family. My wife has an suv, and I have a Vintage Beetle. I will be using this just to take some miles off of her truck that is used daily, and use it kind of part time.
It won't meet the highway honestly. I would use my wifes Xterra for that, since it fits all the kids in it.
I live in Pa. So we do have hills. I took it up to about 65, but the salesman got nervous. SO I let off. Seemed smooth. I was shocked to see a little 4 banger in it. I thought they had a straight 6.
I guess its a TJ? I just know it is a 2002 Wrangler.

I know what your saying. I didn't know if they had any major issues though. Like tranny problems, motor problems...etc. Life expectancy on the drivetrain.
My wife went nuts over this thing

Completely agree...

I drive maybe 5% on the highway while the other 95% is in town and offroad...i also have a 4 cyl 5 speed. I'm completely happy with it in all accounts since i meets all of my needs but if i were to drive more highway, then i'd have waited for a 4.0L

I was in your same position though...i bought my 99 with 60k on it back in October of 2010 and it was spotless and completely stock. Its no longer that way but i'm glad i got it and have zero regrets.

just make sure it meets your needs with the 2.5L otherwise you're going to wish you had a 4.0

No they dont...the 2.5 and 4.0 are basically the same thing just minus 2 cylinders...the ax-5 is slightly weaker than the ax-15 but mine is still holding strong at 97k and is lifted on 35's

Thanks very much! I am not looking for a lot of power. Just around town driving, mall hopper for my wife, and of course winter time! If I do go on the highway, which is extremely rare, I would use my wifes truck anyhow. Its not anything bad about a Jeep. But I have three kids.
I have my Beetle powered for driving fast, its my toy car. My wifes Xterra has a 3.3, and it has crap for power. I think anyhow.
I was surprised at the Jeep. It drove better than I thought it would.
I know the 4.0 has a good reputation for reliability, thats why I was questioning the 2.5, to see if it was the same basically that way.
I know they all need a clutch sooner or later.. But I can do that. I hate automatics. They always seem to be expensive when they take a dump.
This Jeep was very well cared for. The salesman told me they will go well over 200K miles with no major drivetrain issues. Don't know if he was lying or not.

Thanks very much. I know what your saying. I was in a cherokee with a 4.0. Said high output on the tailgate. No joke! that thing had serious power.
Maybe this 4cyl. thing may not be a good idea. I don't want to burn it up.

the 4 cyl is good... has its pros and cons just like any thing... but thw 6 is hole other ball park..

I have the 2.4 on 33 inch tires regeared to 4.88 and runs great. Its not as fast as a sports car but it will get you over that giant mountain. Haven't had any issues with it so far and its been 2 years. Forgot to say mine is the 6-speed.

Agreed...

my 99 is sitting on 35's and gets around just fine right now in town...again, hwy isnt fun at all...it also offroads like a champ and gets through everything the 6's get through. I've even pulled a 6 cyl out of the same obstacle i had just gotten through.

My rig goes in on Friday for a regear (4.88's), axles, and steering so that'll make it even better.

Thanks for all the replies. I truly appreciate it. I am really not looking for a lot of power. Just looking for a reliable vehicle. My wife prefers a stick shift which is good. I just know how many miles these four bangers last on the 2002 wranglers. Someone too very good care of it. It looks like it was garage kept. Even underneath. Kind of odd for what state I live in.

Again...the 2.5 and 4.0 are basically the same motor. They're reliable motors, easy to maintain, easy to fix, and last when you take care of them.

I'm almost to 100k (have 96k on mine) and it runs the exact same as it did the day i got it in october 2010 with 60k on it.

I wouldnt say they are almost the same motor at all. If this is going to remain a relatively stock jeep or mall crawler.....then no probs goin with it......but if you get bit by the upgrade bug and start wanting to do extensive mods and off roading ur going to wish you got a 4.0l motor.....the prob with the 2.5l motor is that it just doesnt have much power.......and it gets no better gas miliage than the 4.0l .......in some cases it gets worse fuel economy.
