Ok. So today I was driving along like normal when I heard a couple of out of place pops. Then a few more. Then a few creaking sounds like metal twisting on metal. Then some metal chirping against other metal.

But this was all when going from no throttle to on the throttle. Sometimes a pop or two when I quickly let off the throttle. It does it when on the throttle from a dead stop. And any other time I get on the throttle up to the middle of third gear. But it might do it all the time, by the time I'm in third the wind and tire noise might drown it out.

Its coming from under me, the transmission area. My first thought was a broken trans mount but I did a quick check and it looked ok. (It was still bolted to the skid at least).

Any ideas?

My first thought is u-joints, but noises are hard to diagnose by description. I also thought transmission mount or motor mount. It could be a number of things. But going down a list this is what I would check

Engine/transmission mounts
U-joints
Suspension parts, shocks, springs and mounts
Brakes
Wheel bearings

Hope you figure it out and let us know what it was when you do. Good luck

Sounds like a dried up ujoint eating up roll pins. I had something I the sorts happening. Pulled a ujoint cup and it was completely rusted inside. Might be worth checking.

Its weird, it sounded completely different from the last ujoint that went bad. But oh well. When I pulled the driveshaft away from the rear yoke the ujoint cup fell off on its own along with a lot of rust/crud.
Sounds about right.
Ujoints make different sounds and feel different depending on how they are failing. And to what extent the failure has reached until it's been noticed.
I've had just a vibration. Then I've had what you experienced now.
Do you use grease able joints? I prefer non grease able. If grease can get in... So can everything else. That's just an opinion though.
Hope you get back to jeeping soon. Cheers!

I got the new ujoint and installed it tonight. I did get a greasable one though. We'll see how it holds up. Drove it down the road and back with no noises whatsoever. :thumb:
They will work as long as you remember to grease it. Don't over grease it as you don't want to pop the seals out. Good to hear.
