Hey guys/ladies,

I have a few questions about the JK's. Hope ya'll don;t mind anwering them, as they may be a repeat of previous threads. Just bear with me please.

1) Which differential ratios do you prefer? 3.21,3.73, or 4.10 (Rubicon standard gearset I think)

2) I have found them used in the price range from ~ 20.5K to 25K, with different trims. What seems to be a decent price for these. I notice they must hold their value very well, like a Harley Davidson does:punk:

3) I know this is counter intuitive, but what kind of real world mileage do you folks get with your JK's. This would NOT deter my choice to purchase a Jeep, but just seeing if it does a bit better than my F150 5.4L

4) do you have to actually look under the Jeep to tell whether it has a LS/locking differential, or is there a code on the INFO label like my F150.

5) Does the 6 speed give any advatage over the AT? I like both, but mis a MT and was just wondering....

I know ya'll have probably went thru the same questions many times, but I am slightly new to this forum and have not exactly figured out the scope of things yet.

I get around 18 M.P.G. more or less. When traveling between NM and Chicago, I've gotten as much as 21 M.P.G. When towing in the mountains I've gotten as little as 13 M.P.G. 18 is about what I get normally though.

I haven't had mine long enough to tell (mines a 2dr, though) the mileage.

If it has a locking differential, there will be a button in the center console labeled "Axle Lock", and that's just on the rubicons and it's standard. As far as limited slip, I'm not sure if you can see it without a window sticker.

20k-25k seems about right, since they only started the JK unlimiteds in 07 there aren't too many to be found. You may be better off buying new for a few reasons (easier to get discounts, can't do anything if a dealer owns the vehicle for too much / more warranty). Also, if you're looking used, make sure it's really 4x4 - most dealers don't carry the 4x2 anymore and so people sometimes forget that they exist. Also, you can easily get a new one for 28k.

If you go with bigger than 33" tires you'll want 4.10 as a minimum.

Depends on the trim (Rubi, X or Sahara)

I used to get 14/19 but now I'm getting about 10/15. Really not sure why and I'm still working on it.

Rubi's are the only ones with locking diffs. Sahara's have a LSD.

I've got an auto, wish I had the 6 speed. IMO the 6 speed is the only way to go.

1)--Get a 4.10, ratio, it's the best all-around, (stock), I've got 33's and it's JUST BARELY OK
2)--Your figures are OK, but used JK Rubis will be 10/20% higher
3)--I average 16mpg unloaded and 15mpg with trailer
4)--Depends on your trust, or LOOK
5)--6-spd is more economic, but inferior to the auto in sand/snow/rocks--I don't do mud, (6) is also PITA in traffic!!

I've had my 09 Unlimited X 4dr for about 3 weeks now and love it. Not sure on the axles, paid 24.5k for it with 18k mi, still working on MPG but I think it's around 12-13 in the city with 33s, mine is not locking and I have the AT and it's fine.

A lot depends on if it is going to be DD or spend a lot of time on the trials

-stay away from 3.21 even if you do not plan on modding with bigger tires
-3.73 is OK for DD with stock wheels, you will probably re-gear if you go 33's or larger.
- expect an average of 15MPG all around
- I prefer 6 speed, especially for towing .. I hear the auto is always jumping around between gears on the highway and will require an extra trans cooler.
-if you get the sport option it comes with 3.73's and LSD
-by a new one, very slight price difference between used. 2011 is coming, some like it, some hate the changes .......
- if you end up wanting on off-road jeep, you will be modding a lot anyway, it's like crack, you can't stop ......

Thanks for the great input, I reallt appreciate it. I probably will buy a new one simply because of the higher prices of the used ones. Plus, I can order it how I want. I can get ht eplain jane wheels since they would be changed, etc.

Lots of great answers on here so I'll try to add a little bit more.

Mileage suffers a little with an Unlimited being a larger vehicle "wieght" than the 2D but you could probably balance that out ok with a manual tranny.

Manual tranny IMO is the only way to go. Too many reasons to list from fuel economy, to simpler engine, more feel for your vehicle..etc but as stated above, the Auto tranny is easier off road and you won't wear your clutch out fast. Of course the answer to that is 4L!! :punk:

I got as much as 20.4 miles to the gallon on the interstate and mid 17's in city with my stock JK 2 door but after changing the street tires out to a set of 31" Goodyear Duratrac 6ply AT tires, my MPG in city is now 16.2. I haven't taken a trip on the interstate yet to see the highway mileage but its probably come down a mile or so because of the larger tires and weight. Both of the numbers are still pretty good considering most Jeep owners report getting 10-14 miles with a few mods.

I have a friend that owned two unlimited rubis and wound up selling each after owning them and moding them for offroading. He bought a 2 door model because of the shorter wheel base and lesser weight for better MPG. The unlimited is a BIG vehicle and the Jeep engine in it is thirsty.
