And I want to preface this by saying I know there are probably MILLIONS of threads just like this,
BUT
What's the difference between a suspension lift and a body lift. I have noticed that a body lift is significantly cheaper, but why? :confused:

Also, Pro's and Con's of each?

Its alright dude!
Body lifts are spacers that lift the body up from the frame. I had a body lift on my Toyota Tacoma to get 3" of lift so my 33s can fit into the wheel wheel. I did not like the on road handling as it was swaying too much and it also raises the center of gravity higher.

The suspension lift raises the vehicle by adding coil spacers and or by replacing coils with taller coils or going all out custom with coilovers, which I did. :punk:Correctly installed with the right parts it can give you a better than stock ride, give the vehicle more flex, better handling, allow bigger tires to fit. There's tons of more info, I suggest buying a complete kit!

Now here's mine on EVO tuned coilovers, I have a friend with a 2008 Jeep Cherokee and she thinks my Jeep rides smoother than her cherokee.

Now, i don't do a whole lot of off roading, besides getting down my street (which is a pain after it rains) so would it be a total waste to get a suspension lift?

I mean, my Jeep is totally stock (tires, gears, literally everything)
What other modifications will i have to do if i get a suspension lift?

Depends how big of a tire you want under there, you could actually fit some big tires with some trimming to fenders, bumpers, or pinch seams. I don't recommend lifting it and going with stock tires...that look don't cut it to me.

If you got the moolah and want to pimp up your ride go for it! Its your Jeep. :dance::dance:

So, just off the top of your head, what are the best/ most credible brands of lift kits?

I would look into Teraflex, Rock Krawler, or EVO. For shocks I would check out Bilsteins, Kings, or Fox.

I'm sure theres plenty out there but I've never heard anything but good with these manufacturers. :thumb:

soo.. another question to add to the above..
when you look at the suspension lifts, i'm looking at a 2" spring lift.. that would be a better ride than the spaces right?
it then starts giving you all the options for steering stabilizers, lower control arms, then upper control arms, sway bar disconnects, rear track bar relocation bracket and adjustable track bars..
can anyone send me in the right direction with all of that?

i've read into sway bar disconnects a bit but.. for a 2" i'm just trying to figure out what would be optimal?

For a 2" lift you would not need much, that'll be enough to fit 33"-35" tires with the proper backspacing on the wheels or some trimming / modding of fender flares. I would definitely get front lower control arms so you could adjust the castor, and adjustable trackbars to center your axles (or get tracbar relocation brackets), longer shocks, longer swaybar links, relocate steering stabilzer, front and rear bumpstops, if the suspension flexes really well you may need longer brake lines too.

If you put a 35"s on a 2" lift don't plan on hitting ANY bumps or speed bumps at any speed. You need minimum 3" for 33"s and minimum 5" for 35"s. A 2" lift only needs longer shocks and longer front sway bar links. You can run a 3" with stock control arms but you WILL need to extend brake lines.

i just realized i posted in the tj section :hide:

question still goes about the extras... i have a jku and read that the 33" are max for stock.. in any case i don't know if i would want to go any larger even with the 2" lift. at this point i really don't want to get into re-gearing. i'm trying to take in as much info as i can but every time i learn about something new it opens about 50 more doors :rolleyes: (which is great) haha my new addiction/hobby is keeping me veryyyy busy!

You've got the frame

And you've got the tub.

The springs determine how far off the axles the frame sits. The body mounts determine how far off the frame the tub is. Just get under your Jeep and look at things.

i would and will some day.. i plan on bringing a pack of beer to my old mechanic tomorrow/soon (and many times after) and picking his brain..

however, for right now, mechanics + daughter of impatient dad + dad who doesn't do any offroading or vehicle mods = me in awkward spot of having to learn the theory of mechanics online :hide:

sorry if i'm clueless, at least i'm trying?..

Don't fret Imped. He's a little... eeehhhh abrasive. Has good intentions, I think it just fails when it comes to getting things out of his mouth. He started the same way you are now, knew nothing. He didn't like to know nothing or get raped on bills so he taught himself what he knows and has built one hell of a Jeep! I don't think he really suggests you go lay under your jeep and magically you will know where to look to see the factory rubber body pucks, I think instead he is suggesting you go out there, lay under it and start taking some pictures of what in fact you have questions about. Then try to research what these parts are and what they do. Like with the springs. Look at them, see what all connects to them, try to envision what would happen if you put in some springs that were 2" longer, what would be achieved. What would actually get lifted.
And if thats not what he is suggesting, thats my suggestion. Ask many questions because if the price is the occasional "search, noob, this question again" then what the hell, someone will still swoop in and take time to explain to you whats what in a calm manner.

Alright, so I think I'm gonna go with a body lift, simply because I'm ballin' on a budget. And since I don't do a whole lot of off roading, etc. So, hopefully last question. My jeep is totally stock (tires, gears, etc), and a 4cyl. I don't want to have to do a lot more until June (hold out for tires and wheels) and I don't wanna have to re gear

I'll cut to the chase, which would minimize the necessities mentioned above, a 2" or 3" body lift?

And would it be totally horrendous looking with stock size tires? In your opinion......
