I finally ordered the Artec front armor kit for the D44.

I can't believe the quotes I am getting for a shop to weld this in!

$350 if I bring them a prepped axle;
$850 if I have them do it all.

Is this inline with what others have seen/spent?

Any help is appreciated!

I got my buddy to weld in my gussets and LCAs skids yesterday for a case a beer :p but I havnt put the truss in yet. I plan to do it when I do a regear because they will have everything apart at that time anyways. That sounds a little high tho.

Did he drop the whole axle for that weld job?

I think the pricing sounds fair. We did all the work ourselves but by the time you drop the axle,prep everything, and weld it takes several hours. Between the skids, gussets, trackbar bracket, and truss it took us 3-4 hours just to prep and weld since we didn't want to hurry. It probably took another 6 hours to remove and install the axle.

Place 1: $580 (including new ball joints). 3 hours at $95. Weld in the truss, track bar bracket, c-gussets, install new ball joints.

Place 2: $650 (without ball joints). 10-12 hours at $65. Weld in truss, track bar bracket, c-gussets, lower control arm skids, install new ball joints.

Place 3: Something like $900 just for the Artec armor kit. Lost the email, so I'm not sure if it was with or without parts.

#1 I'd be worried......

#2 that's way too much time

#3 that's about par for all of that......if they did it ALL and had a regular rate of $90+ hr

I do installs and it takes about 3 hours to do the truss, the cooling can take longer as the diff needs to be heated to around 400 degrees before welding (cast sucks welds crack off) then slow welded and covered with a welding blanket to let it cool slowly....
It can easily be done in the vehicle, and done right....

Artec truss $100
Synergy bj $199
C-gussetts $55
CA skids $45
Track bar bracket $125
Parts alone $524

Labor
Truss 3 hours
Ball joints 2 hours
Track bar bracket 1 hour
CA skids 1 hour
C-gussets 2 hours

So on average 9 hours if doing another while the other stuff is cooling between welding 6-7 hours any less and I wouldn't trust em.....been doing this 18 years.....

Remember the time part isn't a negotiable area it takes the time it takes to do it right....the price is the only thing that should be the variable depending on installer....

I could see 2 guys hammering it out maybe an hour or 2 less with taking apart, grinding, prep and everything that has to be done...remember a truss can easily bend an axle of not carefull


To the OP:
Reason axle out is easiest is it can be put on a jig, welds can be faster and longer the housing still has to be heated up to merge with the welds and truss....then cooled slowly...sand pit would be best but not easy so welding blanket works....
It can be done without and be done OK but taking the time is usually best
