Hi members, I am the new guy on the block!
I have been reading the info on this Forum for about three (3) months and I must say that there is a wealth of Knowledge being shared on this Forum! I have a mechanical background in Heavy Equipment and also had a CJ5 many years ago, which I worked on and understood pretty well, but technology has changed so I am here trying to learn about my latest purchase, which is a 2003 Wrangler X, 4.0 engine, auto trans D30 front diff and a D35 unlocked rear diff with 3:73 ratio.
I stayed away from the 05 and 06 models because of the OPDA issue. Many of you have said at one time or another that the 03 was a good model year.

This Jeep is going to be used most of the time in the mountains on dirt roads, some have rocks mixed in with the dirt. Some of the trails have long duration about 7% grades to pull. That is the worst that it will see under my ownership. There will be no rock crawl, mudding, or sand dunes usage.
I do not have a heavy foot and have a driving stlye that is not abusive.
My game plan is to go with a 2inch suspension lift, wheels with 3.75 backspacing and BFG AT 33X12.5X15 inch tires.

My question is to you experts, will my Jeeps D35 and auto trans hold up ok under the type of driving/usage that I will be doing?

I am retired and don't have a lot of money to work with, but would spend more to help eliminate potential problems. I have already changed all fluids, belt, Radiator cap and battery.

First of all, welcome and congratulations on your new TJ! Sounds like the two of you will have some good times together. My only comment is regarding the tires you're planning on installing. With the automatic trans and 3:73 gear ratio, those 33" tires are going to give you some issues, particularly since you'll be in the mountains. From what I have read and been told, the optimal gear ratio for your transmission with 33" tires would be 4.88. That's quite a difference from your current setup... We have a 4:10 gear ratio with 31" tires. Will likely stick with that since Jeep built our Rubi that way for a reason. Since you won't be doing any rock crawling or mudding, you'll be better off sticking to a smaller tire size so you can still go up those hills. If you're aiming for larger tires solely for looks, maybe consider 30" or 31" as those would be easier for your TJ to manage in comparison to jumping way up to 33"s. Just my thoughts. I'm sure you'll get some great advice from people far more knowledgeable than I am on the subject.

Yes, I could go with 31s, they look good with lower lifts and if that will help to keep my engine RPM more in line with the optimum power curve without re-gearing, then that makes more sense and will save me some money. In fact the Jeep currently has 31s on it, but they are street tires.
As for posting pictures, well I am not a computer Guru, so I will have to figure out how to do it? I do have some pictures on my desk top that I can transfer from, I just need to figure out the transfer. Maybe somebody can give me direction as to how to post the pictures?

I tried the Web address, but the Administrator won't give me access.
Maybe you have to be a member longer to receive access???

I believe you need to reach 20 posts before you can post pictures. Might be wrong, but that's what my brain is telling me.

congrats on your purchase.

from what i've read i have to agree about the tire size. i ran 31's on my old TJ & then had a 3.5 RE SF short arm lift installed. i planned on going with bigger tires once those wore out, but i ended up selling the jeep. so a 2" & 31's will look better, imo.

Welcome to the forum Miser, and congrats on your new Jeep. I agree with Jacqui, that for your use and budget, you would probably be better off staying with your current tire size if you don't want to spend the $'s to regear. Running 33's will significantly take you out of your optimum power band without the regear...don't ask how I know..:whistling:

I'm running 33's with an auto, I don't have the od tho, with 3.73's and it is fine. It's not "optimum" but its not bad. I also have a Dana 35 and it has held up to the 33's with a LSD for 12 years. It's now locked and still running strong and I mostly rock crawl. So with yours being open you will be fine.
