You can't really strip that carpet off. I took a propane torch and just burned/melted it off. It will become very hard just like it's plastic when finished.

I am confused, it became hard as plastic when you torched it or did you torch it and then bed lined it...

The carpet is actually plastic so when you melt it it is hard when it cools. No need to put the liner on because it leaves a very rough surface. I tried to put Herculiner on mine and it just balled up and wouldn't even go on. I wiped it off. Here's a pic.

When I sprayed mine with liner I just melted it with my heat gun and sprayed it with the liner. Came out great and matches the rest of the tub pretty well. You don't have to spray it after you melt it but I had leftover and though why not.

Torched the carpet. Used splatter paint (truck paint) and then top coat with satin rust oleum black. We will see how durable it ends up being.
