Well, its new trans time for the TJ. I have a 1997 with the 32 RH automatic. It failed tonight. Check engine light came on yesterday with 0740 code...torque converter lock up celenoid. Then today it stopped functioning entirely. It does move the vehicle in reverse for about 15 feet before running out of friction. Then the engine just revs freely with no power output. Yes, it has fluid.

I figure I could screw around with the trans and maybe repair it, but at 175K miles I think it is time for a replacement, something I can trust.

So my question: Can anyone recomend a source for QUALITY remaufactured 32RH transmission?
Thanks.

My 32RH went out at about 125k. No check engine light, just one day I put it in gear and no friction. I had my transmission rebuilt locally for about $450 total including taking it out and putting it back in. Granted it was a mom and pop shop and only a one year guarantee, it's been going for 5 years and another 10k miles so far, so good. I changed fluid and filter in it a couple weeks ago, no signs of any problems.

I got a used trans for my F250 from Advance Auto parts with a 1 year warranty for $1000. when everyone else wanted $1000 for a used one with no warranty. New was almost $6000 and rebuilt was $2700.

Advance also had other ones with 3 year warranty for $1500.

Thanks for the replies. I have a line on a reman unit from for $660 with torque converter from Rebuiltautotransmissions.com. And I made an date with a tranmission shop to check out if we can do something less than replace. More on Monday.

Trans removed

Well I spent a few hours today removing the transmission so that I can take it to the shop to be rebuilt tomorrow. They were going to charge me 7.5 hours for the remove and replace. I got the beast out in four, so I'm doin ok.
I do hate automotive engineers. I am convinced that not a one of them has ever actually worked on a vehicle. Just a few small changes could make life so much easier for the mechanic.
