Just bought a 95 YJ 2.5L with 33-10.5's already on it. I made it 4.7 mi. from were i purchased it and I heard a bang lost speed and she finally locked up when i got onto the dirt shoulder from pavement. I thought I dropped a drive shaft but when I looked there was smoke coming out of the front of the rear diff. I popped the filler plug and there was not fluid I could feel. I AAA it to my shop and rear end still locked coming off flatbed. I put 1 hole quart of Marvel mystery oil in rear diff and it still didnt fill it ( obviously rear diff was empty when I started out). just came from shop and it makes a slam when I try to move forward or reverse. Q: ring and pinion or hole new(used) rear end thanks

How much do you want to spend and do you trust another used Dana35. Everyone favors the Ford 8.8. Your choice either way it is a lot of work. Me I would use the opportunity to upgrade and get rid of the Dana 35. I vest a few bucks in the upgrade. If you have access to a good welder your in.

If it were me I would go with a new rear end. While I was at it I would swap in a 8.8 rear diff out of a ford explorer. If your running 33's the 8.8 should hold up better in the long run.

I do have a good buddy that is a bad ass fabricator(welder) his main business is making top end mtn bikes. but im not quit sure what I would need him for?? Can for you give me a quick run down of what I would need him to do? I am a auto mechanic. I work for My Dad we have a small 2 lift independent garage that specializes in Saab's and valvo's. ive been there 7 yrs fulltime. I am a good thorough mechanic but don't have to much experience with truck drive trains. I dont want to spend to much right now i just wanna wheel. I know its gonna b some work weather dana 35 or whatever else but i. got a shop and will b doing it myself. dont really care how long it takes to do anything specific just wanna make sure its gonna b done right. Q: If I put in a Ford 8.8 rear end i am also gonna have to put in the new front diff. correct? I would like to upgrade as this is a B-Day present to myself and frame and tub are in great shape and I plan on building her as I go. but just drained the saving so gonna take a few weeks to get some cash flow back- Thanx

Late 90s Ford Explorer later than 96 Ford 8.8. Make sure when you find one it has the disc brakes and hopefully the E-Brake cables. Should be <$200 out of a junker. Or look on Craigs list there are Jeepers all over that have something to sell. There is a ton of threads on the 8.8 installs w/pics just put it in google and browse through until you find the one you want. Some have made the swap for under $500 some a lot more depends on how you do and where you get your parts from. If your rig isn't broken yet it would be a great time to find the install thread build a parts list and start getting the rear ready for the install. Have fun aand post some pics when you do it.

I just posted this in a thread Help Me Plan my Rear End.

Your Jeep came stock with 4.10 gears. I believe that ratio was also available in the explorers. If you can verify that you still have the stock gears in the front you cand find an 8.8 with matching gears and save yourself some coin.

I spent over 1200 bucks rebuilding my dana 35 and it was a waste! Just get something way more heavy duty.
