Hi All,

I've been reading these forums for a while but only just signed up myself.

I went to start the Wrangler today and drive forwards but it felt like the handbrake was still on. It wasn't and as it finally moved forward it did so with almost a bunny hop. It seemed to be the rear left not moving so I jacked up that side and tried to manually turn the wheel - it's locked tight. I then jacked up and tried to turn the right side, it turned with no problems at all.

Now I'm stuck trying to figure out what this could be? I had it logbook serviced a couple of days ago and the mechanic mentioned that the rear axle seals needed to be replaced - not sure if this could be related?

Thanks ahead of time for any advice, I'm a new Jeep owner and I don't really know where to start.

The vehicle in question is a 1999 Jeep Wrangler TJ 4.0 Litre 5-Speed Manual.

Thanks again,

Ben

im thinking the parking brake is stuck even tho its not engaged. like the spring mechanism on the rear brake on that one side didnt release. lift the rear end and take a mallet and hit the side of the tire. work it back and forth to see if itll come free and start rotating. or take the tire off and tap the drum.

Easy way to figure out what's wrong is to remove the wheel, and see if your brake drum will come off. If it doesn't move then you know it's the brakes. If it comes off, then you have a problem with your rear.

Disk brakes are the same story, however they have a set of brake shoes inside of the brake rotor. Those are the parking brake shoes.

Keep in mind that your rear brakes are adjusted so that there is a little drag on the brake drum, so it won't just pop right off.

If your axle seal was leaking into drum brakes it makes them stick and a bitch to take off. My truck did this. You would think oil would make it slippery, but locks the brakes.
