Hello every body! Long time reader first posting. Well I just got ahold of this 1985 cj7 with an 4.2 in-line 6. I sent the engine out for rebuilding got it back now it’s time to get busy. I started putting the timing belt cover back on and noticed something missing. Seen some videos and looks like I’m missing the plastic tensioner that goes inside. My question is do I really need this piece? Also I read to use perfect seal for the gaskets can I use something else, can’t find that stuff except online. Thank you!

Yeah you should put the timing chain guide back in. I tried looking up the part number for it but it's a little tricky.

First i looked up the part number for the 258 and it wasn't listed. So then i looked one up for the 4.0 (same engine family) and the part number for it was Melling BG337 these are easy to get at any auto parts store.

Then i started looking for a timing chain guide and found one made by Omix Ada with part number 17453.70

So then i check to see if the Omix Ada part fits a 4.0 and it does. So this should mean that these are the same exact part and the Melling part is much cheaper and easier to find. So i would go to my nearest parts store and have them order one in. I ordered one in from O'Reilly Auto for my jeep last summer when i did my timing chain and it was only $8.

Make sure your timing chain cover still has the mounting tabs to hold the guide in place though. Because usually when the chain gets loose the chain will destroy the aluminum tabs on the cover that hole the guide in place.

Thank you! Did a lil searching and also found a Duralast part# 7337 at autozone. By the time I tracked it down it got late on me and started raining. So I’ll put the timing cover on tomorrow, do you think I need one of those alignment tools? Thanks for your help appreciate it. I’m new to the Jeep community but, from what I can tell seems pretty right.

I dont know what alignment tool you are talking about. I have never any kind of alignment tool when doing a timing chain on a 4.0 or 4.2

Cool all I needed to know. On the manual it says to use one to aligne the crankshaft seal. Thank!

Rebuild update. Got the engine in everything hooked back up I believe but I cant get it to start, I set the timing up as shown in the M.R. 252vol. 1 book I get gas to the carburetor andIi have spark but cant get it to start up. just keeps turning and I get some backfire. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciate it. I hope i hooked everything back up correctly.

The distributor might not be in correctly. Either off a tooth or 180* out.
Crank the engine over by hand with the spark plugs out. and the valve cover off. As the intake valve on #1 cylinder actuates, continue cranking until the timing marks align. The rotor should be pointing to #1 cylinder.

BTW, one way to avoid buying the alignment tool is to install the seal in the cover, install the cover to the block with the gasket in place, but only start the bolts with a few threads. Then install the vibration dampener (crankshaft pulley). The vibration dampener will center the seal and the cover on the crankshaft and then you can tighten the cover bolts to spec.
OPs already beyond this point, but replacing the timing chain is common enough that it's worth posting again.
