i know this has been talked about many times. However from reading all the threads, gears seam to be a matter of personal preference, year/jeep model, and jeep use.
So heres my question.
I have a 2011 unlimited sport automatic. Ive installed a 3.5 inch rubicon xpress lift and run 35s. I use my jeep as my DD but also enjoy wheelin as often as possible. (every other weekend or so). Last weekend i towed a small jet ski and trailer through some windy hills and holy crap that sucked. There was just no power. It was very difficult compared to before the lift.
As of right now i have the stock gears obviously. What i want is what will get me the the best power for wheeling and towing. I'm more concerned about that than i am about MPG, however all advice on what does what would be great.

There is a chart somewhere, but with the tires, lift and automatic you should get 5.13 gears at minimum, or 5.38 if you plan on going with bigger tires. I went from 4.10 to 5.13 and love it. I don't tow, 3" lift and 35's. DD and wheel about once a month.

I was thinking 5.13s. I know I don't need to go any higher as I don't plan on going to 37 inch tires anytime soon if ever. I remember seeing the chart too but can't find it now either.
Anyone have any experience towing anything after lift/tires/gears that could chime in?

i have 4.88 gears down here in the mountains of florida :hide: those gears where just about perfect with my 35s. ran them like that for a month or two before i finally bought 37s....

anyways, honestly - i think my gas mileage improved a little bit (4.88s and 35s) because i wasn't lugging the engine or revving the piss out of it to get power. it was pretty easy to stay in the power band so to speak...

can't really say if 4.88s or 5.13s would be better - but i'd be inclined to lean towards the 5.13 since you're in the hills a lot more than i am.

far as towing goes... i've only towed with the 37s and 4.88s... towing about 500 lbs and the weight of a 15' atv trailer ... my JK does okay. but you can feel the trailer.

i've done that twice.

the charts here (and elsewhere) Header put 5.13 in the green for your setup

With your set-up I would go 5.13. If you are towing with the overdrive off as of now, you will turn about the same rpms as the overdrive on with 5.13s. I went with the 5.13 and couldn't be happier. Don't get me wrong it still is not a sports car by any means, but it feels so much quicker than it did before the swap.

Hey thanks for the help guys. That bit more of assurance of 5.13 pretty much made my mind.
Hate that I've only got a Dana 30 under this thing for now but that's an expense I'm not prepared to spend until its absolutely required.
Anyone got any advice on brands? I prefer American made. That's just how I am.

I had 5.13 on my 2008 Automatic with 35's. Was great. I only had the D30 too but I am not a worry wart like many JK'ers are. I went with Yukon R&P and Motive MAster Install kits. Why? Cause that is what Jason at Krawl Offroad sent me.LOL

I dropped off my jeep today to get 5.13 gears on my 6 speed manual. Can't wait to pick it up tomorrow.

If I was sticking with 35s I'd have gone 4.88 but my next purchase is 37s

4.88, if you had a rubi I would say 5.38.

4th gear with 5.38's on your 42rle with 35's comes close to a stock manual in 6th with 32's wich is around 2500 rpms at 60-65 mph.
The problem is the gearing in the transmission, particularly overdrive.
The one factor you may want to look into is gear tooth strength on a Dana 30. For a long time nothing was made above a 4.88 for that axle because the teeth were to small on the r and p. if people are having success with a 5.13 not breaking teeth now then go that route.

you'll be fine with a 30. you might want to think about c-gussets and sleeves while the axle is apart... especially if you're going to wheel a lot.

far as brands - I'm running G2 gears, G2 placer gold axle shafts and the G2 master install kit. very happy with all of it :D

If you just want the power than gear toward the lower end. I think its 5.13's in your case? I dont know where the gear chart is but just do a higher ratio and you will get the power back. pretty easy.

Holy crap I didn't realize this process was so expensive. Going through 4wheelparts it'll run me about $1,800.00 with installation. That kinda puts it on hold for a bit

That's a reasonable price for getting all the parts and having them installed at any competent shop.

Shop around. Off Road Evolution (So Cal) does it for a grand, but that's the very bottom end.

I'm in the same boat, 2010 JKUR, 35s, auto. Going with 5.38s.

:rofl: welcome to Jeep modification 101. Lesson #1 empty wallet $$.
You can get it done cheaper. I've been quoted $1,400 to $1,600 at other shops.
