Hi,

Old Cherokee owner here and I just bought an 04 Rubicon!

On this Rubicon, the owner added snow studs to the Duratrac LT245/75R16 E code tires with over 80% of the tread left.

I can leave them on all year here in Colorado, but I want to take the Rubicon to the west coast this summer where I could likely get pulled over for having studded tires. Also, I want to take it to Moab this summer and do some light bunny slope crawling.

So, should I have the studs removed? Do it myself or would a tire shop do this?

Would removing them mess with the integrity of the tire?

Would keeping them on mess anything up if I do some light crawling with them?

I am not sure getting brand new tires and putting these studded ones in storage are affordable for me right now. I honestly don't feel I would need to ever use studded tires. I would likely just go buy a new pair of the same exact tire without the studs.

Your thoughts?

I guess another option would be to buy new tires and put these studded nearly new tires on craiggys list.

You don't need studded tires here (I run DuraTracs on my 4Runner) and studded tires seriously compromise dry braking distance and are too loud. Call Discount Tire or a small tire shop. I bet they could take the studs out but so can you- with lube (that does not affect rubber) and good pliers that can grab the head of the stud and then twist them back and forth while pulling. Check youTube and Google for videos.

This is a sound idea. The studs will decrease your grip on dry pavement thus increasing your braking distance.
And yet all the stupid Subaru owners insist on using them for 9 months out of the year, in my area. We typically only have 1 day a year where there is even snow on the ground, in town. It usually melts soon after it falls.

I wish Oregon would outlaw them.

I see a few (5-6 per year that I see) people do that here. I hear they tear up the asphalt too but probably not with light vehicles. Oregon should at least restrict their use for the 2 winter months. People will cry about nanny states but people are also stupid and need to be nannied.

I see them being very useful in the snow belt, especially up north and in Canada. The DuraTracs do well in the snow- much better than any AT I have used and probably 80% as effective as my dedicated snow tires.

Thanks for the advice. One local place here doesn't want to do it. Discount tire makes no guarantees that they won't damage my tire and the want my Rubicon for a day and a half. I'm not sure I have the patience to sit around all day and pull 600 studs out of these tires.

I think I will just get new ones and sell these.

Yeah, that would take a lot of time. I have not watched the videos but it sounds bait laborious. You may not be able to sell these till next winter though, but that is what I would do- buy new tires.

I bit the bullet and bought a new pair. Thanks everyone. Truly a very helpful community here!

Btw, I have a basically brand new pair of studded E load Duratracs for sale. Cheap!
