This may be an old question, but is there a repair manual for TJ's that you recommend? Chilton or Haynes??

Neither, they are generic. The best repair manual is the FSM, factory service manual, for your specific year. Do a search for one on this forum and see what you can find.

X2. And Haynes & Chiltons are worse than generic, they are full of errors and incomplete at best... especially due to them trying to cram too many different model years into one thin book.

I found a used FSM on Ebay, I think I paid $80 for it. The Chilton and Haynes manuals cover too many years, and leave out a lot of info. The factory manual will be specific for your model year, and includes detailed repair procedures. Costs a few more bucks, but will be well worth it.
