I have a 1999 Tj and I am in the process of putting a Ford 8.8 in it to replace the Dana 35. What is the next step up for the front Dana 30? Should I stay with the Dana 30 and just put a locker in it. I am currently running 4:10's and 33X 12.5 tires. It is a 4.0 with auto trans. I do not do any rock crawling and primarily run mud besides it being my daily driver. Although I do have a 400 plus dual quad 350 sitting quietly under my work bench I have no intentions of replacing the 4.0 at this time. Any suggestions?

for 33's the D30 wil be fine, if you want to put anything bigger then 35's then you will need to upgrade, but if you dont plan on bigger than 35's then you'll be fine

There are a lot of different things you can do to strengthen a D30. High strength shafts, ujoints, trussing, etc....The weak point tends to move into the ring gear at that point. A lot of guys will take an High Pinion D30 from an XJ and put it into their TJ's as it will bolt right up using the same knuckles, shafts etc....Plus it gives you a reverse rotation high pinion housing. You could easily run 37's on a setup like that. Another popular swap is a D44 from a Rubicon. Yes it generally does use the same tubes as the 30, but it gives you 30 spline inners and a D44 ring gear.

After that you are talking junk yard or aftermarket for any kind of swap.
