Need to replace the indicator stalk, but reading through the Haynes manual, it looks like a nightmare! Is it actually possible to do this without removing the steering wheel (with airbag) and ignition lock, or have Jeep managed to turn a simple five minute job on most cars into a major rebuild?

By indicator stalk do you mean the turn signal stalk? If so, it was very easy to replace on my 98. Once you remove the plastic cover on the steering column, it should be self explanatory. You remove a few screws, unplug the switch and it slides right out.

My 04 has a few more controls on the turn signal stalk so I'm not sure if it's as easy since I haven't had to remove it yet (knock on wood).

Many thanks for that. I was looking at the wrong model year in the manual, which is a one-piece unit that slides over the steering column- time for some new glasses I think!
