'92 YJ - 2.5L manual transmission:

I noticed the rubber insulator on my clutch bleed line was pushed behind the insulator plate. I "fat fingered" my attempt to pull the insulator back into place and the entire piece fell off the clutch bleed line and down into the bell housing. I tried desperately to remove the bellhousing dust cover with out any luck. I am not experienced at all with any tranny work...

Long story short, the rubber boot is still in the bellhousing. I tried to reason it out and convinced myself that it was soft old rubber and the gears would shred it up. I probably made a big mistake. I have parked the Jeep and am trying to figure out if it is dangerous to leave this soft rubber piece in there.

Can someone tell me if I need to ensure this piece is removed? I will admit that I felt the Jeep "jump" ever so slightly about 3 times when I was in 2nd gear driving slowly up a steep incline (pavement - not offroad). I know for a fact that it was the rubber piece getting chewed up or hitting the gear. The Jeep has never done that "jump" before.

Am in into some trouble here???

Please excuse my ignorance in describing parts. If I have named anything incorrectly, it is because I am a novice at involved auto repairs. I have found that the Wrangler Forum is full of very experienced Jeep owners that are all very patient and understanding with all levels of repair experience.

I am not a professional mechanic but I have replaced my clutch and/or transmission in several vehicles including my Jeep. I don't see how that piece of rubber should cause you too much concern. There are NO gears inside the bell housing. Just the clutch plate and the transmission input shaft which runs through the middle of the housing. I'm pretty sure the piece of rubber is harmlessly sitting down a the bottom of the bellhousing. If it was me I wouldn't worry about it.

I wouldn't worry about it. There's nothing it can mess up in there. Worst case scenario it will get up in your pressure plate and it will make it rubber dust when you hit your clutch but there's really no way it will get to that point!
