I have a new JKUR ordered and I am getting ready to do upgrades. I plan on putting a 35 inch tires and a 2.5 lift on it. So my question is on a Rubicon (which has better springs than a Sport). Is it better to do a new spring lift or put 2.5 spacers on my springs? And at what point will I lose the ability to use the auto sway bar disconnect? I want the best off road parts without losing the convenience of auto disconnects).

There is a gent on here by the handle of Mojeaux that went the spacer route on his two door Rubi...from what I can tell, he's pleased.

I went with new springs and shocks on my four door Rubi because I wanted to upgrade both components in a way that would improve my suspension's performance. Sure, a spacer lift or a fender chop...or both will let you clear bigger tires. I wanted something that would handle additional weight, give me slightly better articulation and the ability to customize the handling dynamics.

Up to you what your priority is.

It is a myth that Rubicons have "better springs" than a Sport. The springs may be stiffer, or may not. 4 doors generally have stiffer springs than 2 doors, but beyond that it is very difficult to discern any sort of reliable pattern.

In any event, it's always better to get better springs. Budget boosts are great, but having quality springs that are actually the proper length is the way to go.

I agree with all the above!

If you looking to gain anything from a lift besides height, it is always better to do a coil lift. The stock springs, Rubicon or not, is really not designed to take all the added weight of aftermarket parts.

So if I got say for instance a RK 2.5 flex system I would use my stock Rubicon shock since it does not come with any? Would that be sufficient?

No. You'll need shock extensions or will need longer shocks.

With the 2.5 Flex, you would need shocks, bump stops, front spring clips (nice to have but dont have to) and maybe a exhaust spacer kit depending on what year your JK is.

Let us know if you need help. We would be more than happy to put together a package deal for you that would cover everything you need.

Also, if money is not a huge object, you might want to look at stepping up the Max Travel or the X Factor kits in the 2.5" range. Very nice!

what would be your recommendation on 2.5 inch lift kit, for JKU Rubicone 2013, with the desire to maintain comfort level of stock ride (or better) ?

I'd stay away from spacers... for the work, and the cost, it isn't much more to get some decent springs... I did spacers on my Tacoma and regretted it... Went with AEV for my Jeep and much happier.

If altitude is all you are worried about, then spacers are the cheapest...

Me too Jason!

I've been looking at the AEV dualsport xt 2.5" lift for my JKUR. Also, I would like to go with 35's and I know I am going to need new wheels so that I do not need to use spacers (I don't want to use spacers). Will I need new gearing as well? I have the 4.10 automatic gearing. If I need new gearing I might would just stay with 33's and just go wide like 12.50's. SO MANY OPTIONS! I'm overwhelmed and I just want to make the right decisions.

When we added the LoD bumper and winch there was some nose diving. Rubicon may have some upgrades but agree with the above posts about "upgrade" of suspension. Put in a 2.5" AEV lift and am very happy with ride. Definitely an improvement from stock and no more rake or nose diving when stopping. I don't have the pentastar but have had few issues with my '11 and 4.10 auto with larger tires (except the drop in gas mileage). Only real issue has been the hot oil light when running 4-high. Good looking Jeep btw.

Spring Quality

I see there are references to spring quality.... the basics are linear and progressive rate springs.

Which is "better"? ... and what other quality attributes should a newbie look for?

How does one know a each coil will meet the manufacturer's specs and tolerances?
