I was watching horsepower t.v. a little while back and they were working on a 2010 JKU. Instead of doing a re-gear, they installed a Rubicrawler (only available for the automatic). It is supposed to give you several different gear ratios to choose from so that you can gear the Jeep to the conditions you enounter(offroad, street, etc.) It is supposed to give the Jeep an additonal 2.72:1 gear ratio when both the Rubicrawler and Jeep are placed in 4 low. Since I have the 3:73 gears in my 2010 rig, the rubicrawler would give me close to a 6.5:1 gear ratio (I think you could wheel up Everest with that). My question is, since the rubicrawler costs about $1,500 and a regear costs north of $1,000 why don't more people consider this a viable option. I assume that even though it costs more, since you don't need to constantly run a set of lower gears it would save on gas usuage on the road and give you more power off road (truely the best of both worlds). Does anyone have this in their rig? Are you happy with it? Do you think it is better or worse then a true re-gear. Thanks everybody.

From what I can tell - this does nothing to solve the problem associated with street driving and taller tires. The 2.72:1 ratio will be too steep for street driving (that would be like me, with a non-Rubicon model, driving around in 4-lo), but the standard 1:1 still leaves you with way too tall of gears to be happy moving up hills in top gear (not to mention the more sluggish acceleration).

On the trail, sure...you'll get an additional low range that can make up for bigger tires and give you an extra low crawling ratio. But on the street, this doesn't fix the problem.

I know that isn't the best explanation but hopefully someone more eloquent will show up.

So nobody has an opinion on this other then Bubba. Does the lack of fellow Jeeper experience with this product answer mean that the product isn't really desirable. I was thinking about upgrading to 35 inch tires and could deal with the loss of power on the road as long as it could be a beast off the road.

Hmm... So if I'm right it looks like in a Sport or Sahara you'd have:

2WD-H @ 3.73:1
2WD-L @ 6.45:1

4HI-H @ 3.73:1
4HI-L @ 6.45:1

4LO-H @ 6.45:1
4LO-L @ 9.17:1

That's interesting, I've never seen that product before. Wonder how reliable it is.

I think Bubba's right though, none of those numbers are really good enough to replace a regear. Going from 3.73 to 6.45 is a big jump!

I actually saw that show the guy explained. "It does not restore power like a regear but it gives you a low crawl ratio that is competitive with the rubicons."

The only downside I see is if you need 2wd daily driving benefits because of 35" tires. But for those that are not doing 35 it would be a get benefit especially if you tow with your jeep. I think that I would like to look into this one. Be nice if they had one with a smaller ratio increase.
