In Yellowstone national park. 5 minutes into the West entrance and greeted by one of the local residents.

I was told go after Labor Day and before October and the park is practically empty. Absolutely correct. Parking everywhere and perfect timing.

Growing up close I've been there every month of the year and I agree with the advice you were given.
Somehow nature isn't very "natural" when it requires sharp elbows to be seen.

Ditto I am also close and I will not even go to YS or GNP during the summer any more. Amazing how rude the tourists are.

That is my favorite place in the world. I've been camping and fly fishing there almost every year since 1987. It is my cathedral. It's majestic. September is my favorite time of year. (Photo taken in GTNP on my way home from the last trip.)

We were there about 6 weeks ago, and had the privilege of not only seeing Old Faithful, but it's close neighbor Beehive Guyser! While Old Faithful is, indeed, "faithful" with a period of 60-90 minutes Beehive has a period of anywhere from 8 to 24 hours!
