Just as the title says fellas! Was wondering if anyone else has ever ran into this issue?

To start out, when I was in desperate need for rims, I found the oddly-attractive and ever-price-enticing Black Steel-ProComps, which I picked up a set for $280 (2 years ago) , how can you beat that price right? :mooning:

Once I received these budget-friendly rubber-huggers, I was overwhelmed with excitement and anticipation. I was doing away with some hammy-down aluminum, American Racing rims that someone had spray-painted silver (Yes to all of your questions).


Tearing open the box like little Tommy on Christmas morning, excited to finely get the chicken-limbo set he had been begging for all year. I was met with the following:

All but one of the rims had bent edging, in either direction.
All of them had some sort of chipping in their paint
There was 0 attempt at reinforcing the packaging
The boxes themselves had tears and holes in them.


Against my better judgment, I took them to my local tire shop and asked if they could do anything about the condition of said rims. Guy said, yeah he could bend back into place, free of charge.


Upon doing so more chipping occurred and ultimately the level of conformity to the rest of the rim was never achieved. He then said they were going to use...

Bead Balancing. Has ANYONE ever heard or used Bead Balancing? Fast forward to now, the rims have all but fallen off and I attempted to get them rotated and balanced due to an onset of awesome Speed-Based Death-Wobble.


New tire shop in California told me that there was no way they were comfortable putting the needed weight on the wheels that it was asking for. 8oz+


Broke down and bought a new set of rims (it was only a matter of time). On to the reveal. When they popped the wheels out of the tire, they found this.





These tires have never been anywhere sandy. I had also never taken them crawling either. Some mudding, but that's about it.

Just for giggles, here are the ProComps that were removed. Still waiting for two more rims to come in to have entire set replaced.

Bead balancing is a common technique used. Most of the time it is used on large bias ply tires such as super swampers. However if a tire/wheel combo is difficult to balance such as in your case, beads are an option.

Sure, the use of balancing beads is a well-established and proven way to balance tires. I've been using them in my Jeep for many years now. Look at this site for more information on the type I use:

So no idea as to where this "sand" came from? It was found in the other two tires as well. These tires didn't have any apparent damage to them.
