Ok guys, Iam new here and currently looking at getting a jeep. I saw this forum and have been researching "what to look for" in buying a used jeep. A little backround on this rig...
1995 4cyl 2.5l
33in tires
4in lift
New extended drive shaft
New U joints
New slip yoke
Minimal rust under the jeep...by the rotors. None on the frame itself
5k on the new clutch
Looks like it could use some new hoses
Interior looks really clean. No rust, rips, stains, etc.
99,000 miles
Now the bad....from what I saw
-Pretty significant leak coming from the rear end (The pumpkin)
-A leak coming from where the motor and the tranny meet (Possibly rear main seal??)

Now for the Noob question. Feel free to laugh :) I have already.
So Im not familiar operating the 4 wheel drive on a Jeep and want some pointers. Its a manual transmission. Should I be stopped, in neutral, and then go into 4 wheel drive?? Or should i be slightly moving (Less than 5 mph) and then engage????? Haha...any help would be great. I wanna at least test drive this beast and make sure everything is working properly before I consider it.

After all of that....The owner is asking 5100 obo. I think I could def. drop the price down because of the problems. A friend of mine said the leaks should be a somewhat easy fix...IF that is the only problem. Feedback would be great. Should I consider getting this Jeep....or just leave it to someone else. Thanks and sorry for the long post guys

It sounds like a decent jeep but the price seems kinda high for a 2.5L. To shift into 4H the manual says to be at a stop or less than 3 mph and stopped to shift into 4L. The clutch needs to be pushed in and it doesn't matter what gear the tranny is in.

my 1995 was shift on the fly, shift into 4hi at any legal speed is how they put it. 4 lo stopped in nuetral.

i think it sounds like a nice jeep, the 4 banger is a little weak, i had one. if you talk him down from there its not a bad price if its in nice shape and not abused. also look at tires and stuff, new set of 33's are just under $200 ea.

i've done it, it actaully does just fine off road, litte sluggish on the highway, top speed is about 60-65 and you won't use 5th gear anymore. doesn't get any better mpg than the 4.0

a completely untrue statement jpdocdave. sure it may do fine off road, but i had 31's with that little four banger, and it sucked you shift so much and it turns out to be harder on the tranny, thats when you start losing gears!!! anyways, it was so hard to stay with traffic, save yourself the headache and either plan to swap or just start with the engine you want in it, don't settle just cause your eager, hold out for the good one!

you also had a throttle body injection right, this is multi port. to each their own, i just try to give info and experience, not make their decision.

and i am just trying to let my shitty experiences be an example to others of the "not so right" decision. i am not making up his mind! multi-port only give you a little better throttle response and like 1 horsepower:flipoff:
