After getting my synchrodes replaced due to the grinding of the tranny cause of the previous owner didnt grind the tub after body lift. It still grinds when i shift hard. I have 1 year warrenty on the tranny job, so i took it back and they said it is the shift angle. I have never heard of that. They say it because of my body lift, and my shift needs extending. I extended my shift, but they say they need to get the angle right. I have never heard of such a thing!!!! The shifter is not hitting the tub or the rubber seal or boot, i actually have all that taken off to make sure it not hitting any thing. Does anyone know what the shifting angle is or has anyone even heard of that. I think the shop is trying to make excuses to avoid taking the tranny apart and inspecting it cause its under warrenty. let me know, thanks

both my 97 5 spd and my 05 6 spd grind a tiny bit going into certain gears if you dont pause for half a second of so in the middle of the shift. May just be normal, how bad is the grind? Then again, I could also be wrong, but I figured 2 of mine did it, probably normal.

New one on me, But I am no expert on transmissions. The only thing I have personally seen a lift effect in shifting was blocking the shifter from going fully into gear.

Just to add. Mine grinds every once in a while but usually only when I get lazy with the clutch.

I had problems shifting when I had a detroit locker in the rear, once out, it decreased significantly. But, it still grinds a little, especially shifting into second, just like before the locker was installed. Normal quirk I believe, it's a truck tranny, not a HP car tranny you know.

ya mines mostly 2nd and 3rd. does it in 5th sometimes too. If its not real bad I wouldnt worry. My Rubi has a 2,000mi old trans in it, because the previous owner took it in for an oil change and mentioned it popping out of reverse. I took it in to make sure everything was kosher when i bought it, they test drove it and checked the bolts, didnt say anything bout it grinding.

There is a trick to shifting fast and I doubt I could put it into words to describe it.

Most of you will be dealing with the NV3550. So good luck shifting fast without grinding. There is a point between the drive line slop and shift points that allows you to get it in gear without grinding. Every jeep I've driven is different. If you are locked in the back it is even worse. The best advice I could give anyone grinding their tranny is to slow down. Find the sweet spot. Then proceed to getting faster. I can row through the gears pretty good on my wifes jeep without grinding. But I miss occasionally and people on the sidewalk tend to stare.


I miss driving my spooled up 8.8. There was no slop between shifts.

Oh, mines differnt then mr.c. Mine doesnt grind outside the truck so far that ive heard, mine is soft and in the shifter. Almost like you can only hear it from the front 2 seats, and its only the top gears (1 3 5 plus 2nd).

edit:Feels almost like the gears are all moving 200rpms different speeds and you just kinda gotta force it a little to cooperate, unless you pause at nuetral before going to the next gate, then its usually much better. going straight from 1-2, or 2-3 with no pause and you can feel em grind a tad them grab. :end edit

my 5spd was the same way I could just be shifting wrong...
