JUST BOUGHT A 99 TJ AND IT SEEM LIKE SOMETHING TRIED TO EAT THE SHIFT KNOB AS A TRAIL SNACK.... I GOT A NEW ONE BUT CANT GET THE OLD ONE OFF....(REALLY DONT WANT TO RESORT TO A BLOW TORCH AND SLEDGE HAMMER) :banghead:

I used a pair of vice grips to remove mine. It tears the knob up but if yours already looks rough it shouldn't be a problem

Pop the shift pattern cap off out of the center, there is a lock nut in there. You can use a small screw driver to get it out. Just undo the nut and the knob will screw off. When I replaced mine, I left the nut off to avoid popping the cap off and ruining it if I need to remove it again.

Can you get to any of the metal at the bottom of the knob? If you can I'd try to get vise grips or a small pipe wrench on it. You may have already tryed this.

As soon as i get out of work imma pop that cap off and see what im working with...
