Wrapping up Winter projects. My headers exit outside of the frame, so I had to do some inner wheel well trimming to make them fit. Doing so, I had to remove the rubber inner fender splash guards.
For those of you running side-exit headers, what have you done to keep mud out of the engine compartment?
Years ago I had 74 CJ that we put a 390 out of a 1969 AMX in it along with all the internal goodies 11:5 forged pistons, solid lifter cam, alum intake 650 double pump, heavy duty clutch I tried cyclone headers but they didn't last, broke three sets. Finally switched to a set of Hookers and never looked back, mine weren't side exhaust but did exit out the sides, couldn't you just cut out the inner fender well where the header tubes are located? Maybe you could use soemthing like this to attach to you fenderwell? https://www.amazon.com/White-Small-...locphy=9017245&hvtargid=pla-397789923338&th=1
Nice looking rig!

Thanks! Yeah, the outer fenders are still intact, and I only needed to do minor trimming on the inner fenderwells. But there's also quite a bit of the rubber flap stuff the factory puts in there for mud protection, and a lot of that had to be removed too.
I know I won't be able to seal off completely around the headers, just looking for something that works for most of it.
I did find this, which may be able to be customized:
This was last year's look with the side pipes and headers in place. This winter was for swapping in a Ford 8.8, SYE, Woods shafts, springs, seal up an engine leak, vacuum tank, clean up wiring, some interior paint work, etc, etc.
Those splash shields might be worth a try at that price, bottom line, your pressure washer will be your friend after you've been out muddin. LOL
