Game wardens can though with out any probable cause or a warrant. It all depends on if you are on public or private lands. If you drive it strictly on your own land you do not need insurance or registration. However, if you drive it on a public roadway or public land, then the rules change of course and you need to be insured and registered.
You really need to pay close attention to the state you are driving in as the laws differ with respect to private property laws and government intervention.
In New Jersey a police officer needs a warrant or probable cause to enter private lands. They simply cannot enter the lands and arrest you for being on it without permission and charges can only be pressed by the property owner for trespassing not the police.
In Pennsylvania, it has been expalined to me (and I have yet to verify this) that the rules are different. The police can enter private lands and arrest trespassers (on posted property) without a warrant and do not need the sanctioning of the land owner.
Not only do you need to worry about getting pinched by the fuzz but some of the die-hard locals like to shoot at you too so tread carefully.
Odhinn, I like your attitude, as well as your outlook and ways of thinking........However, trust me, I'll get ribbed pretty good many times on here I'm sure.....I am The old one, deverhart sr.Not sure about the laws up there, but here even some dirt bikes are registered as street bikes. All they need is street tires and one mirror. I think someone stated this but the laws are state specific in most cases.
Just to add and not trying to hijack here. I noticed the Title and decided to clarify something about questions, my opinion only. The only reason why I hang out here and ask questions on this forum instead of trudging through things trying to figure them out is because of the people here. They are all good people on this board and don't mind answering questions, the ones that would belittle a person for asking a question don't last long here.
I use to tell my crews to ask if you don't know, and that I would rather someone ask a question, no matter how simple, then to not know and get someone killed. The only stupid questions are the ones that people don't ask. If you don't know something and need to know it then go right ahead and ask. I'm a little tired of kids sitting behind a keyboard and trash talking people by calling then stupid noob, or even worse simply because they don't know about something. When I was growing up there was accountability. I was taught to respect people and I felt the belt a few times because of things I said.
Theoldone, I personally feel you would never get hacked on here for a legit question like this. Now if you post a question like "What is the favorite offroad motor vehicle of the members on this board?" You might get ribbed a bit, but it would more then likely be in good fun. The jeepers here are a great bunch and make me proud to be part of them. As I stated above, the disrespectful people that slip through the cracks are not here for long or they begin to act properly because of the mods and senior members. So all is cool and be at ease here. Thank you Mods and senior members for a great atmosphere filled with great people.
OK, My butt kissing for the week is done. Watch out OC.
