In shopping CB's I see that a single sideband CB puts out many more watts of power than a regular CB. Do jeepers use SSB? Can anyone explain just how it works and why it is allowed more power/range.---thanks

Yea, that. Lol. Good link, short sweet and to the point.

In a nut shell, radio signals ride carrier waves, which have mirrored images on either side called sidebands. Single Side Band operation (cause it is a mode of operation, not an actual band of frequencies) takes the carrier signal and one of the duplicated sidebands and throws em out the window, resulting is less used bandwidth, allowing more "channels" - assuming everone else is also SSB and is removing the same band (upper or lower). But it is a bit more complicated than that, at least in Ham applications. Not too familiar with it in practical application on CB.

Please make sure you are buying a cb (27mhz) with ssb and not a 10M import radio that is illegal to use =)

Another thing to think about is that your rig can only put out so much power. An AM signal, as noted previously, consists of a carrier, upper sideband and lower sideband. The carrier uses 50% of available power and the other 50% is divided evenly between the two sidebands.

When you get rid of the carrier and one of the sidebands, all available power is now concentrated in the one remaining sideband. More efficient, less bandwidth, and lots more power in the signal being transmitted.
