They DO have steps. However, make SURE you have a dremel ready, with a bunch of those circular sanding bits ready to go. THEY DO NOT BOLT UP CORRECTLY ON A 2012 JK. You will need to grind out one of the holes into an oval to make them fit. Not hard, and not a big job, but just be prepared to do it.

I ended up returning mine for a refund.....the holes on one side were to far off. Might be the last smittybuilt product I will buy

All you had to do is dremel out those holes a little bit more. It probably took you longer to box them back up than it would have to get them mounted. We all have the same problem. Your holes were not any further off than mine. The trick is NOT to tighten the other side, so you have SOME play. It took me 30 minutes to do this, and the only reason it took 30 minutes is that I didn't know about this. Had I read a thread like this, it would have taken 10 minutes.

Also, my other Smittybilt parts fit like a glove. The reason these have issues is that the manufacturer has their jig set up wrong, thus, all our stuff is off by the same amount.

In all honesty, this thread, especially my post far above, said that this IS an issue. It seems to me that you tightened the hell out of the other end of the rail, giving yourself no play at all. I needed to grind out about 1/4" or so, which gave me just enough room to get it on. Ace rails are great as well, and the fitment will be spot on.

I'm kind of on the fence about the smittybilt rails. They look awesome, but the fact they mount to the tub and some serious doubts I have about the manufacturer are leading me torwards different products.

How are the smittybilt rails holding up for you guys that purchased them?
They do mount to the tub but they are mounted to the beefy bolts on the tub, not on some thin sheetmetal. If you slam something hard enough that would cause the rails to damage the Jeep itself, you will have much bigger issues to worry about.

Ditto on the door dings. Excellent protection.

Hey guys, got a quick question for anyone who installed the Smitty's themselves. Went to install mine today and ran into a problem (of course). Our bolt holes are aligned correctly (front and back) but the "U" shaped cuts aren't large enough to push the housing up enough to get the bolts through and threaded. As in, the two holes match up with where they should be with the bolts, but the "u" shaped cut doesn't.

Am I just being stupid and not placing it correctly? Should I dremel out the bolt holes symmetrically or just shave off a bit of that "u" shaped cut? Thanks for any advice you guys can give and sorry for being a newb!
95% you are doing something wrong, 5% Smittybilt has a new f*** up.
