So, we're only a couple of months away from snowboarding season, and I'm trying to get prepared as much as possible. I just got my Jeep this summer, so this will be my first winter with it. I'm a Jeep newb, as well as a 4x4 newb in general, so please be patient with me and speak like I'm dumb.

My Jeep is a 2010 Mountain Unlimited, btw. I currently do not have a hitch.

First question: I need to know the best way to carry one or more snowboards. It is possible that I would only be taking one or two people with me, in which case I would just fold a seat down and throw the board(s) in the back. But if I have a full load of passengers, what's the best (read: most cost effective) exterior hauling option?

Second question: Are my Bridgestone MT tires going to give me grief this winter? Should I consider getting a set of winter rims/tires? I live in the Nashville area, so we don't really get significant amounts of snow, but we do occasionally get that dreaded "wintery mix" that basically brings traffic to a standstill. I am pretty decent at driving; suffice it to say that for the past three winters my daily driver was a Honda S2000 running summer tires and I still managed to survive accident-free.

I'm so ready for snowboarding season! And I would also like to know the best way to carry the boards, I was thinking of getting a Yakima powderhound roof rack, but it's expensive in my book...

Yeah I'm waiting anxiously for the start of the snowboarding season! But here in Vermont we don't have any snow yet and it's hovering in the 60's. But I have a 2dr sport with a soft top and need to occasionally bring 3 friends so I found that Thule has a part that will attach to their bike carrier to carry four boards. The carrier and attachment will run you just shy of $400. That's the most cost effective I found for me. There might be more cost effective options if you have a hard top.
as for the op tire question. I opted for a second set of steel wheels (cause they will eventually rust) and dedicated winter tires. I'm assuming you should be ok but Id hate to miss first tracks on a powder day inthe event you get stuck on mountain roads!

Hahah!!!! Yes!!! I'm in the same boat... 4x4 is nothing new to me growing up in rural North Dakota, but I just picked up my '08 Sahara Unlimited a few months ago. I drove a modded '02 Mustang for 2 winters up here with snow tires with no problems.

I picked up the Jeep so I can haul people and snowboards around this winter. I'm pretty excited... this was this morning:




Not enough snow for anything but went 5' down the drift in front of my shop :D it's all supposed to melt this weekend though.

What are all of our options for roof mount? I don't want put holes in it for obvious reasons, and it needs to stay intact for summer topless driving. It seems I can fit maybe 3 snowboards and gear with the drivers side back seat flipped...leaving some room for passengers.

Oooooooh snow boarding . I was thinking about getting a cheap board off craigslist and driving the 200 miles up to where I can see snow hehe. I hear there are some good places in flagstaff

anyway Im getting off topic . You dont have a hitch or I would say get a hitch carrier. the congo cage with the yakima cross bars would work no?

BTW I believe the 2dr jk congo cage is cheaper then that 4dr (its like 280 on a tj)

Its expensive , I would think a hitch + board carrier would be cheaper



heck you probably dont even need the crossbars, just strap em sideways

Firstly, the setup above is exactly what I have with the Yakima bars. In winter, I keep my two sets of Yakima powderhounds one large and one small up top. In summer, my kayak J racks and Sharks (or stackers) stay up there. I'm considering getting the cargo rack for future outings. Nice to be able to put junk up there. It makes the jeep that much more versatile having a rack system. If it gets on your nerves, just take it off. It is an easy on, easy off rack system especially if you have some kind of lift to help with that part. Only draw back is I can't get the soft top open with the rack on. I haven't dealt with Kargo Master on the misfit yet but they seemed eager to help me on that issue. I just haven't had a chance to put the soft top on and take pictures before winter so it will wait until spring. Hauled 4 kayaks to Florida and Maine this summer from Massachusetts and it didn't sag or make lots of noise. All racks make wind noise which of course mine is no exception. This rack system is as solid as a rock. I found the price not too bad for the features.

nice find on the yakima stuff! I priced out one that attaches onto the "rain gutters" as they call them... looks to be ~$400-ish shipped with room for boards.

but this seems to be more of an investment than what I wanna get into...
Be careful on any rack system that clamps to the gutter on a jeep. The gutters are made of plastic. Read the rack fine print about load limits and you will find that 40 lbs is the max. approximately. If you are going to spend the money on either Thule or Yakima bars, get something under em that will support some weight.

Thanks for the heads up! I can't imagine I'd put anything with that much weight up there but something to keep in mind.

Edit...I've got the hard top. Any write ups floating around the net on DIY to keep water out?

Sorry for the off topic reply, try Turtle Wax Ice interior cleaner on the seals. If that doesn't work try silicon lubricant...not sealer. The sealer is permanent and will make a mess of things...not meant for this application the lubricant will slick up the cleaned seals and enhance its ability to form a seal without degrading the rubber.

Trailer hitch systems are tough on the boards. It may be convenient but salt and crap is hard on the equipment especially ski bindings. Snow tires have softer rubber. They grip ice and snow way better than any off road or all season tire. That said, it may be overkill in a wrangler. Still waiting on my jeep but I do ski 100 days a year.

If you have a hard top you can add your own rails. Still not the cheapest, but it works well.

Hey jgorm, can you tell me about the rails on your hard top? I bought a 2010 JKU 2 weeks ago and I too need to figure out what to do for snowboarding season. I like the idea of having rails on my hard top, but I'm concerned about drilling into/damaging it and water leaks after installing the rails.

What are your thoughts? Was it easy? Any concerns after you installed the rails?

This is my first Wrangler and I love it! I just don't want to break anything yet... haha.

^ to sealing the holes up is easy. Just put some silicone on the bolts and on the rails all the way down. Nice solid bead will not let them leak. If it leaks (do a hose test after you get it done and wait a hour or 2 for the silicone to setup) then you need to re-seal the edges no biggy.

Yup, its easy. I stepped it up and drilled every hole instead of every other hole like the yakima instructions said to do. Measure 3x to make sure that they are straight and parallel. Mark the holes and drill away. I sanded down the area under the rails so that the silicone would get a better "grip". Then i used painters tap to keep the silicone where i wanted it. Just be sure to remove the tape minutes after you get the bars screwed down. Its a 2 person job, but only takes an hour or so. I've had no leaks so far, but i dont use the hard top much so its hard to say that it will work forever (i think it will) I put a thin bead on each screw before sticking it in too.
