I have been reading on here for two days and thought I had it all figured out...
I need new tires and would really like new wheels as well. I have a 2013 unlimited with the stock 18 inch wheels/tires...255/70/18. But I would like to go to a 33 diameter 17 inch tire but without spacers or lifts. I mostly drive road and sand. No trails.

I really like the Rubicon Hard rock wheels and have been looking for part outs. Then I saw these Quadratec 92615 2415 - Quadratec Hardrock™ Alloy Wheel in Grey for 07-16 Jeep® Wrangler & Wrangler Unlimited JK in 17x8.5 Size with 5.2" Backspacing - Quadratec

So, I thought cool! I'll just order those! But from all that I read and UNDERSTOOD (because it just goes right over my head) it sounded like I needed
a wheel with a 4.5 inch backspace or less. I was looking at a 285/70/17 tire.

The above rims have a 5.2 inch backspace. Will this work?
Also really like the duratracs...but don't see a 285/70/17 offered? But thought I had seen pics of people with them?

Maybe I just need to tak a break from all these numbers!

5.2" of backspacing is fine for a 285 which is only 11.2" wide. The factory backspacing is around 6.2" and a 285 just slightly rubs when turned lock to lock so an extra inch will suffice.

When most talk about 4.5" of backspacing it's usually for a wide tire like 305 or wider which is over 12" wide. I run 4.5" of backspacing for my 305/70/16.

I just looked at the Discount Tire Direct website and they have 285/70/17 Duratracs in stock.

http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/filterTireProducts.do?pgTires=4&cs=285&ar=70&rd=17&counter=0&fl=&sortBy=prca&fqs=true

Also keep in mind running 33's without a lift is fine while on the street but any flexing off road especially while disconnected will cause rubbing issues with the fenders or worse. I just clear my fenders while off road and I have a 1.5" Teraflex leveling lift.

The research for tires and wheels can be quite maddening but hang in there. Here's some thread that may help you out:

Also check out the Toyo AT2 285/75/17, they great and less expensive than the Duratracs but are E rated.:

If you prefer white letter, here's the 285/70/17 Toyo AT2 like that:
