I got tired of seeing the faded red shockboots and after reading both good and bad about having them, I am glad I took them off. The pistons look fine but the metal on the shock itself is rusted up pretty good. The shocks seem to be in good shape other than that. Point of the story, if you have them take them off!

+1 on removing the boots. They're only good for holding mud/water.

Completely depends on where you live. That is good advice for people like yourself and even me, but others who live in dry, sandy areas should keep their boots on. The sand will pit and erode the shafts of the shocks, so the boots are much needed protection.
