I'm just doing my 'research' for my 'soon' Wrangler purchase. It will be a daily driver(+fun), will the soft top be too noisy on the expressway? I live in Michigan, what about weathering with the soft top? I know there is a big difference in $$$$ for the hardtop/soft. I was thinking that buying one with a hardtop would be better and then getting a soft top - for $$$. Part of the problem, there aren't many Wranglers for sale in my area - they're either really beaten or brand new. I know it will take me awhile to find the 'right one'.

my old TJ ('99) only had a softtop. i never had a problem with it. when i sold the jeep last spring the softtop was like new.
my new TJ came with the top-in-top (hardtop and softtop). now in the winter it´s much more comfortable. the inside get´s warm much faster and after turning off the engine it stays warm for a much longer time inside.
i can´t think about driving without the hardtop in the winter.

I have a soft top and what nicolas says is true...but my heater keeps me toasty enough.
It's noisy at highway speeds...I don't mind
It's easier to go topless.....
My husband's Jeep has a hard top.....I like mine better :D

Everyone will give you an opinion....only you know what is satisfactory for you. I recommend you test drive both and see what you think.

I used to have a Geo Tracker with a soft top... only downside is that it makes them easier to get broken into... my Tracker got robbed twice within 5 months. So that made me go for a TJ with a hard top for that reason alone. THe hard top is staying on untill I get the space to store it and swap for the softy for the summer or something.

i have a hardtop now...and i'll tell u that i'm looking to buy a soft top now. but i will put the hardtop back on later on and just leave the soft top folded down underneath it...get both. the only downside i can think of is (like he said ^) is that they are easier to break into.

Get it with the hardtop........they are plenty of softops you can buy afterwards that are not as expensive as that hardtop will be.

I have owned both.. the last hard top sat in the basement gathering dust the the whole time we owned the jeep. however in your part of the county you get a lot of snow and ice.. and trying to scrape plastic window does not work too well. Thus get the hard top and then save up for the soft top. Plus taking the top off is not a big deal and can be done in under 15 mins for those really sunny days..
