My 97 TJ just started having problems when starting in the morning. Takes a couple tries to turn over and once it does it idles rough and if I give it gas it sputters and stalls. It is also backfiring if I get it going slowly down the road. I really have to baby it the first few miles but once I get going it runs fine. Any thoughts? I have had the intake and exhaust manifolds replaced in the last 6 months and one mechanic said it did this because of water in the distributor and he put some sealant on to fix it. But obviously that didn't work if that was the cause.

The check engine light came on but I don't have a code reader so I have to go by autozone after work and see if I can borrow one. But the check engine light has been on and off for the power steering pressure sensor switch which I replaced 3 weeks ago but I think the wires might be bad. I know I need find out the code but was just throwing the symptoms out there in case one of you brilliant techs could point me in the right direction.
