Hello All,
I wrote earlier about a strange problem with my Wrangler where the battery appeared to be very low and the ignition lights would not come and after I got it started with a jump it would not stay running without giving it gas.

I just tried to do some more diagnostic work on it and something really strange happened - a light came on when it was running that said check gauges. I looked at the voltmeter and it was pegged to the right at 19+ volts! I cycled the key off then back on and the engine died - no ignition lights - no power to the starter - and not even a small charge to the battery.

If this were my 69 Camero I would think that the ignition slide switch in the steering column was messed up - but I don't know if this 97 Wrangler has a slide switch that the ignition cylinder actuates. I now think the idle circuit is electircally controlled and I am not getting any juice to that circuit because of the Ignition Circuit.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

if the alternator is overcharging the batter(more than 14volts) it will fry the battery and kill. And if its pushing out that many volts, it looks like its the regulator... and sadly its built into the PCM.

I don't know what your ignition would have anything to do with it.

Did you get the battery checked yet? The charging system may try to compensate for a dead/shorted out battery.
At an idle the charging is at it's lowest and there might not be enough juice to run the computer, ignition , all electrical and charge battery therfore no run at idle.
At higher rpm the alt is putting out enough juice to run everything and try to charge battery which may explain the high voltage.

Starting/Battery Problem - Fixed!

It was the battery. It had a dead cell and only producing 10 volts. A new battery fixed the problem. It looks like my 69 Camero experience does not apply to a vehicle that has a computer. Not enough voltage was being produced at idle to keep the regulator working and therefore the entire ignition system. Fortunately I did check the battery as recommended instead of just replacing the PCM - at a price that would make Bill Gates envious!
