So i recently just got my 98 jeep wrangler 2.5l 5sp back from this moronic mechanic. The work that was done on it was to replace a bad idler bearing that he messed up to begin with. anyways after two and half weeks and brand new bearings and crankshaft i get it back. but with my luck its leaking oil pretty heavily from what looks like the back on my oil pan by my starter.:banghead: it never leaked before i took it to this guy. So i started poking around trying to find out where the leak is coming from. to my great descover i find that none of the oil pan bolts are torqued to specifictions aka (finger loose). after fixing that problem it still leaking down my transfer cover and the right above my starter from what it looks like. if any one has had the same problem i would love to hear how to fix it. or if there might be another place it could be leaking from.
Thanks, Tyler

if he used a cork gasket its shot. once they get oil soaked they're useless and will always leak. I'd get a new pan gasket and check that. then I'd look to see if the rear main seal was done properly.

there is a blue seal that i can see around the oil pan and im not sure where the main seal is.it on top portion of engine or lower? cause there is no oil from the the top. seems to be centered around the oil pan and aroudn the oil filter.

redo the pan gasket. the rear main is on the back of the crankshaft. to change it you have to take out the transmission.

the rear seal is changed by dropping oil pan on any engine i've ever worked on,to access rear main cap... a likely suspect from ur description of events. could just be pan gasket though
.. good luck with it...:)

Napaonline shows the rear main seal on a 2.5 as being a 1 piece seal. 1 piece seals are installed from the rear by removing the transmission and pulling the seal.

Does anyone one know how to pull the starter out to get the rest of the bolt. Is it just two bolts holding it in and it just sides out or what?
