CB Guru's,



I'm new to CBs and Jeeps. I'm going on my first Trail Run with my local Jeep Club, one of the requirements is a CB radio, so I went with a Midland 75-822 and a 4ft Firestik. My question is do I need a spring mount? I'd imagine that it was cause the antenna to hit the Hard Top more often since it would be more flexible. I'm I missing something? Thanks!

It depends on the trails you run. If your out in the desert and won’t likely be hitting anything your good, if your in the pine scrubs hitting things a little extra give may be a good thing.

I don't run a spring any more as i got sick of it bouncing around. I have been spring less for at least 3 years and no issues. I live in Montana so lots of trees.

Most antenna's have enough flex built in to take the occasional branch hit. Adding a spring makes them wippy, and since it adds length to the antenna makes the tuning more difficult.

No spring.

That's the exact setup I just installed on my JK as well. I did NOT go for a spring mount, it is quite rigid and didn't sway at all on the highway due to wind resistance. Due to the mass of the antenna, I would think with a spring it would be whacking the roof too often. I DID, however, opt for a quick release mount for the antenna. I don't plan on running it on all the time and it does give me another 4" of clearance over the top when I need it
With this setup, I was able to tune the SWR to around 1.7ish and did NOT need an additional ground plane to the tub. The ground on the tailgate looks to be good enough

I used to run a spring but no longer. If you are concerned with "give" when encountering overhead obstacles such as tree branches, etc., you might consider a Firestik Firefly rather than the usual Firestik II.

I am happy with my 4' Firestik Firefly. I use it with a Breedlove all brass quick disconnect so that I can quickly change to a traditional 2' Firestik II for around town which avoids having to deal with the antenna when pulling into my garage.

I don't run a spring either. Standard Firestick and it moves enough to handle any tree branches it encounters. I'm in the east so we have lots of trees.

If you put a spring on it when on a wooded area trail you can rope the antenna down for clearance, military style. As your not bending it 90 degrees it won't effect the polarity much. If it is too springy just use a stiffer spring. This is what I do with my HF Ham Radio antenna...

I would definitely not run a spring, especially with that extra-tall antenna. That antenna is tall enough to sway around on its own, adding a spring would allow it to bang into the top, spare tire, etc. I personally never recommend more than a 3' antenna which gets out fine. I've cut back from a 4' to a 3' to a 2' 15 years ago and love the 2'. It doesn't get in the way of anything and it talks easily to those in the rear of the sometimes very large groups I occasionally lead around the deserts.

Out a tennis ball on it, because that thing is going to whack the crap outta your top and window. That's my guess at least. I had a 5' mounted on my license plate holder and it flopped back and forth, horrible racket against the trip just going over a side bump of any kind. Went retro and added the tennis ball, no more noise. Went with 5' because of here it was mounted so I could get a good bit of it above the roof line. I wish they had a tail light mount for the JK like they did for the TJ. Totally different tail lights though

Spring is available at any major truck stop but I would also recommend 3ft ant. and a tennis ball. keep in mind if you do install a spring the added length will change your SWR reading.

That's a great Idea, I only plan on running it when I go on trail runs so this would make it convenient. Thanks for your input!

This is good information, I was under the impression that I needed the 4ft. If I can really run my Midland 75-822 with a shorter antenna, I'll definitely go that route. I've never been out on the Trails with the other Jeeps using CBs, but i can't imagine you need tons of range out the CB.

Thanks everyone for your replies! I'm excited to test my CB out. My SWR is good, I just haven't heard any traffic on the radio. I drove up to the Interstate and heard nothing. So hopefully all is good, I guess I'll find out during the trail run.

With your SWR being good, odds are that your CB is operating fine. Not many people run CBs any more, not even many truckers still do. So that you didn't hear any CB traffic on the interstate isn't surprising. I used to turn my CB on to listen to the truckers but I haven't heard them on much, if any, in recent years at all.

I had dual Firestiks on my truck (semi) since I think they look cool. On the advice of a CB specialist I took the springs off, since they interfere with reception and output. Then started breaking Firestiks on trees in town and campgrounds (I tow fifth wheel with the Volvo). Now I have whip antennas on the truck, but still a 4' Firestik on the Wrangler.

I have a 3 & 5ft FSs both adjustable. Usually I run the 5ft for the hills and distance on the "deserted" county roads on my DD. Then I put on the 3ft for the fun times. Thanks! It looks like spring-less is the best for Jeeps, I can't wait to give my 4' firestik a try next month when I go out with the Jeep CLub!

Have you noticed any noticeable difference with range between the 3ft and 5ft? I think the 4ft sticks up pretty high already so I bet that 5 footer looks tall!



I used to work the missile fields out there back in the 90s. Our trucks had radio's that had great distance on them. I didn't know anything about radios back than (or now) and thought they were just CBs. Giving the good range, I'm not sure what we were using.

I’m running a spring on my rig along with a quick disconnect with the fire stick. The spring I have is stiff enough that it doesn’t swing around too much. I do keep a tennis ball on the antenna so I don’t have to listen to the metallic slap when the antenna hits the roof rack.

The quick allows me to pull the antenna when parking in the garage or low overhang. This does not mess with my antenna setting.

A couple points that were passed on to me. Not sure if they are Old Wise Tales or what but ...

1) your antenna should be at least a foot above the tallest part of the Jeep (all more reason to have a spring)
2). Ground your antenna in addition to a body connection

I also installed a Cobra HG S500 on the roll bar of my rig. I used hose clamps to secure it. The wiring is run behind the roll bar padding. I did have to get a 6 foot extension cord to reach my CB on the drivers side of the console. Installation looks good. Sounds good especially considering the speaker was $23 on Amazon.
