You should feel it in the wheel, or find some dirt, get stuck, engage it and try again.

I was just wondering, how can I tell 4hi is really engaged, regardless of the "4wd" light?
Get in some grass or a gravel road , put it in 4 wheel and give it a lil gas and pop the clutch ( nothing to serious ) get out and if you see 4 burn outs in the turf instead of two rear you know ur in!!

If you are driving in 4wd your steering will be tighter. It will take more effort to turn the wheel.

If you are on dry pavement, engage 4wd drive forward about 5mph, and turn the wheel. Your tires will start chirping at you.
