Sun Shade on Freeway

Does anyone have experience running a sun shade top on the freeway or highway? Is it tolerable, or is there excessive flapping?

I've used one on my JK before that was held on by bungee cords, it didn't flap at all on the highway at 75. You do need to make sure you use all the mounting locations for the bungee cords because if not I could see it flapping around.

Thank you.

What brand is that? It looks similar to SpiderWeb.

It's the alien shade, got it from amazon last summer.

You shouldn't have any issues. I've run the Alien and the Spidey.
Based on that I'd recommend the Spidey. It fades less quickly and there is less gap at the sides dependent upon your model year.
If you have a JL Spidey has gone away from the balls/bungees entirely and it looks far better.

I have the same 2 piece Alien. For me it's great, for my wife not so much, you can draw conclusions from there. My only complaint is that with the 2 piece, you'll lose a few inches of headroom, I need to figure out a way to pull it across the top of the roll bar instead of how it settles in the center. I'm tall enough that it can be a little irritating.

I’ve ran the spiderweb shade for about 4 years with no issues. I did have to buy some shorter bungees to fit my roll bar correctly

I have the Spiderweb Shade and it isn't an issue at all. I don't have a hard top so I leave it on all year under my soft top... somehow it is actually makes the Jeep seem quieter than with just the soft top alone. Could be my imagination. No flapping alone or under the soft top.

I try to keep the top off my Jeeps as often as possible, but the sun in South Texas is too brutal on my bald head and baseball caps don't fare well at high speeds (even backwards I feel like it's gonna fly off and I'll lose it). I've used Spiderweb (JK), Alien (TJ) and some knockoff brand off Amazon (JKU). They do move but barely, if I lifted myself off the seat an inch or two I'd touch the shade while the Jeep was still, so it's close to my head and I never notice it.

I DIY’d mine based off a YouTube video from “How to Wrangler.” Painted it with Plastidip and except for having to replace a bungie cord every few years due to sun damage, it works great.

^^This. I have the same set up and works great. The only thing I have noticed is that with 2 long haired German Shepherd dogs in the JKU that Alien sunshade acts a filter and catches all the fur that flys around so it can't go up and out.

The only flapping I've experienced is from the passenger side when someone's sitting there. Sometimes it's tolerable and sometimes it's not.

We like to welcome everyone right after their first post.
My experience in life tells me that not speaking much is an asset. I wish I had known that when I was younger. It might have prevented a lot of lumps.

Good Luck, L.M.

This may be a bit late, but I just ran across this. Take a good long look at JTops. Absolutely the best sunshade I’ve run. I know people with other brands and they love them except for (fill in the blank) the one little problem with them. They flap too much, they sit too low, you have to drop the windshield to install them, the Velcro comes loose, the bungees break, whatever.
With the JTop the only thing I can say is it costs more, but when you get it, there is NO MORE PROBLEMS. I also like that it’s American 🇺🇸 Made. I have the dense titanium which has a tighter weave than any other sunshade I’ve ever seen. It doesn’t flap, it connects with magnets along the windshield, and there NO gaps around the edges.
Buy once, cry once. You can’t go wrong with JTops, and no, I don’t work for or have any affiliation with them. Other than being a VERY happy customer.

Thanks to everyone. I am concerned about the headroom loss. Living in the Phoenix area, I'd like the easiest removable shade as possible; the night driving here is perfect without the top.
I’m not sure there is any headroom loss, at least with the one I have (Alien). I actually just swapped over my soft top today and I install the shade and leave out the 2 bungee balls from the footman loops so I can close the soft top. Remember the shade basically sits above where the roll bar is, I don’t think you head is that high up. I run my shade all the time with the soft top and can open and close the top no problem and there is no flapping even without the 2 bungee balls at the soft top catch footman loops.
