A few YJ'ers and maybe a truck are planning on heading to the Sunflower Mine OHV Trail between Mesa and Payson this Saturday. Anyone looking to join the ride is welcomed to do so (regardless of rig) - we ask that everyone abide by the “no Jeep/4x4 left behind” rule, meaning competent persons should offer a hand to anyone less experienced or in need of assistance.

Here's a link to the FB Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/835154296947527/

Here's the trail itself: https://azoffroading.com/arizona-trails/sunflower-mine-national-mine/

Air Down:
We will meet up at the trailhead staging area at 8 AM to begin airing down. The GPS coordinates are: 33.93122, -111.46414

Fuel:
Trip is about 29 miles, so gas up before you get here and you should be good.

Communication:
CB radio recommended, channel 4 or 8 will use used and decided upon during staging and air down.

Equipment:
Trail is rated moderate to difficult. At least 1 locking differential is recommended though I have heard there are ways to get around. Some areas can be narrow and slippery, but generally are passable in 4x4. Airing tires down is recommended. Drivers and passengers should have sufficient recovery equipment available or and know how to properly use recovery equipment.

Weather:
Weather is expected to be clear, with a cool start to the morning. Bring snacks and water, plus some warm clothes in layers that can be removed as the day warms up.

Time on Trail:
About 5 hours, which should allow a few breaks for water and snacks and a quick walk around of the mine.

Cool trail. My Jrep is off trail until I get some suspension stuff cleaned up, but that wont be by this weekend. Have a great run and stay safe!

@badAZbiker - there is a lot of places you can have a LOT of fun on this trail by dropping into the wash next to the trail.

May be a bit too aggressive for my open diffs but I'll tag along.

The big stuff is all optional in the wash. There are a few places you will need a little skinny pedal and careful tire placement on the main "trail". Seeing the old mine is cool!

Had a leaky water pump pop up - luckily it was yesterday rather than on the trail (it wasn't catastrophic, but a lot easier to fix in the driveway!)...

I believe it was the fan clutch that had failed actually; there was a lot of oil on my fan shroud and on the front of the clutch itself. It likely wobbled just enough to take out the seal just enough to get some weeping. Oddly enough this was a HD version and Made in the USA from a company I've never had any issues with. Anyways, it was a good opportunity to clean the engine bay up and checked the fluids. While it was all apart, I flushed the coolant system, replaced the idler pulley (it was making a slight squeak I didn't like) and changed the oil. She's running like a top for this Saturday's trip!!

As @mommymallcrawler stated, the trail is fun and has some bigger obstacles along the wash. The rocky section takes good wheel placement and is a good opportunity to flex out your rigs. We will have some experienced spotts and of course a few people to help run a winch cable, but from what I've been told by a handful of people, there are easier lines and harder lines. A stock TJ should be able to do the easy lines without much trouble. The locker recommendation was for those who want to play some...
@badAZbiker and @Got it at last we look forward to seeing you there! If you have any questions, please PM me and I'll send my phone # in case you need it.

I have a PDF of the Trails.com guide for this (#17 for those with a guide) and if you want a copy, I can email you one (just PM me).

Just a reminder, we will stage here:

Weather Update: the temps should be in the 60ºs for the highs, starting out in the 40ºs in the canyons. I hate to do the "dad thing", but please dress warm and in layers :)

Facilities/Services: If you need to use a restroom before or after the ride, want a snack, need gas, etc. - you can go to Jake's Corner General Store which is just north a few miles (a fun store to stop in anyways, he has some interesting nicknacks and scorpion candy).

So far we have 3 YJ's, an XJ, a JK and possibly a Yota...

I'm not sure what part of the town you're in, but a few of us are meeting here and are leaving at 7AM:

It's a "Park & Ride" on Power Rd, just north of McDowell (on the eastern side). You'll see at least 2 YJ's and an XJ there.

@Pressurized - you gonna make it? See below for a meet-up spot if you're on the east side of town.
Unfortunately I won't make it... My event cancelled, but my responsibility as an adult isn't cancelled and I have yard work to do. Blah!!

I had 2 people cancel last minute, but at least a few of us made it out! It was a great trail with nice scenery and some challenging sections.

There was also so much misinformation on the local 4x4 and trail pages that I wanted to put a video together of the trail itself. There were some indeed some washed out portions consistent with the FunTrek Map. I would consider that to be the most accurate map I've seen of the trail, other than the type (the map lists FS 3522 but it's actually FS 3521).

Here's the video -
