My 1989 jeep wrangler has been sitting for over a yr. due to emission failure here in DC. Will a Howell TBI solve my idle,vaccum and emission problems? I need some honest advice. The last bit of advice I got told me to get a webber and that only past emission for 2yrs. I miss her, help me get her back please.

Well one thing you have to remember is that if you put the carb on and it lasted 2 years then obviously there is some other tuning issues or simple maintinence that needs to be done.In my opinion there is no 1 piece magical fix.THere is an array of things you have to maintain to keep her in good health.(plugs wires,coil etc etc)You may need a carb adjustment or you may have some vacuum issues.I let the guys with more carb experience reply to this.Personally i wouldn't run out and spend a couple hundred dollars when it might be some elbow grease and a case of beer away.

i agree no magic fix. make sure its in good tune, and if you aren't really good w/ carbs (i'm not) find a good shop, with an old guy working there. they will have an exhaust analyzer, and they should be able to dial in the carb.

there are multiple reasons it is failing, but it probably just needs to be adjusted. i've worked with old timers that would adjust the carbs just outside the test stations till it past.

i say do the stuff you can, make sure plugs wires cap and rotor are good, and have it checked out.

Webber vs TBI

Thanks fellas for your input. The truth to the hole story is that I have been fine tuning/correcting vaccums for the past 5yrs. In GA I found a 4x4 shop that still couldn't get it to pass. Now in DC, I'm having a very hard time finding someone to help me. I'm willing to take the hit for the TBI, heck I've paid over 2hundred a yr to people who say they know what there doing. I'm at the end of my rope.
