The New Guy, with YJ Questions.

Hi everyone,

Just joined from CO, hope to have my first Jeep the end of this week! Assuming all goes well, I'm trading my Harley for a 1986 YJ.

I should be seeing the Jeep for the first time later this week. Anything that I should be looking for in the way of problems, or common issues with this model or model year? It's a 6 cyl, automatic, 88K miles.

Thanks in advance for any help, pointers, tips, etc.

Rust, look for rust!!! Especially on the frame near rear wheels and shackle mounts.

Oil leaks. I had to do almost every gasket on the engine when I bought mine.

Make sure 4x4 works. There is a vacuum disconnect in the front axle that frequently acts up. Pretty easy to fix, but a good bargaining chip to get the price down. Course your trading a Harley so...

Honestly, from the pics I'd say that Jeep has been well cared for. I'd be happy to own that bad boy.

Out of curiosity what kind of Harley are you trading?

I'm not positive but I believe that year has the Peugeot BA-10 automatic trans. It's not the beefiest tranny around and does fail. If you plan on wheeling it hard the tranny may not last.

A 2000 Road King Classic. It's worth a little more $$ than the Jeep, but not a ton, and I've been looking for a trade for a long time. We'll see, if the Jeep is in great condition I'll do the trade.

I would bet the Jeep would be worth way more than a 2000 road king for one reason....They didn't make a YJ in 1986...they didn't make a JEEP at all in 1986. So that thing is as rare as a jack-a-lope!

AMC made a CJ-7 up until 1985, then Chrysler bought them out in 1986 and the 1st wrangler was a 1987.

87 Wrangler, 4.2L with an auto and 88K on the clock, if the frame is mint and the body is good too. I would value it somewhere around $4500.

And just so you know, the Peugoet BA10 was the 5spd trans in 87. Yours has a TF999 auto in it.

The CJ was made in 86 my father bought a 86 CJ7 new off the dealer lot.

It might've been titled as an 86, but it was a left over 85. It wasn't a 1986 production year vehicle. I owned one as well. 1986 CJ-7 but if you run the VIN it is actually an 85.

A 1986 will have it in the VIN and it will have an emission sticker under the hood indicating it complies with emission standards for the 1986 model year. If it has this it is truely a 1986 CJ.Check your facts on Wikipedia 1986 models do exist but 1996 models (YJ) do not.I had a 1986 CJ.

Welcome to the forum. Looks pretty clean on the inside. Check the frame and under the floor mats. Good luck.

Nice looking jeep, I've never understood pulling the carpet out in cold climates. It's hard enough to keep these things warm with the softtop. I know it's easier to keep clean, but rubber floor mats with a lip work great for keeping the slush off the floor, and the carpet with a good backing stays warmer and quieter....well as quiet as a rag top jeep can be.

Jeep looks good on Pictures, but on pictures you also see that the jeep lives in a snowy region. I would pay lots of attention to rust. both floor pans, rear shackle frame pieces and front shackle frame pieces (both sides). Also check trunk, since it's soft top very possible the there could be rusty holes near the latch (trunk door). Overall check frame well. Cosmetic look is the easiest sale point.

Thanks everyone. Owner should be bringing it down end of this week, so I'll be checking it out then. Sounds like it's in good shape, but seeing is believing.

That said, I've been reading the forum for a few days, and I'm totally psyched to get my first jeep! If not this one, then another!

Got it today! There's not an ounce of rust on this jeep, except for the exhaust pipe. Body and frame are spotless. Original owner was from AZ, so I guess it doesn't get much better than that as far as rust goes. Seems to run great, pulls a bit to the left when braking. 89K miles. Needs the fuel gauge sending unit replaced, but the last owner provided me a brand new one that he hadn't installed yet.

Even came with a CB! :)

Mine is automatic, yes. What's the reputation of the TF999 auto? Apparently the rep of the Peugeot is pretty bad.

Nice looking YJ. I have the tf999 in my 1995 Sahara and it is a tough transmission. I am an automatic person so I may be biased!!! If you change the fluids when needed and keep it from running hot it will live a long life
