It's time for new shocks for the Jeep and I'm up in the air on what to get. Currently running Pro Comp ES9000 and they are about shot in the rear. Just wondering what's a decent shock around the $250-$300 range and also I am wanting to remove the shock extenders and go with a full length shock. How do I determine what length shock to buy.

I'm currently running a 3 inch trailmaster spring lift with a 1-1/4 inch body lift.

I know a bunch of people who swear by the Rancho 5000X shocks. They are not the same old Rancho 5000 shocks from years ago but an off-road performance tuned conventional shock. Should fit in your budget too.

And right now Rancho has a $50 rebate on them. Either the 5000 series or the 9000 series adjustable shocks are a good budget shock options. I have a set. But I prefer my OME shocks. The 9000 adjustables have the advantage of being adjustable, so it is more likely you will like them. The 5000 series are a bit stiffer than the stock shocks, and a little stiffer felling than the OME shocks I also have. The 9000 series Rancho shocks should allow you to pick the ride. But, as mentioned, it is a good idea to paint them as they tend to rust. Even if you just hit them with a can of Krylon clear coat. Also, the 9000 series adjuster knobs should be greased.
For a bit more money, in the $600 range, you can get a really nice set of Falcon shocks. They are the shocks I am planning on getting soon. They are a buy once for the life of the Jeep kind of shock.

If your budget allows for 300 a shock than go with the Falcon 3.* series. Don't think i have ever seen a bad word said about them besides price.

I think he is thinking $350 for a set... I would spend a bit more and get the falcon 2.1 shocks if on a budget, but personally, i love my falcon 3.3's.

I am still fighting this my self. Thanks to hedgehog I was going to buy the rancho 9000, but now he has me second guessing that Idea and im wondering if spending 600 on the 2.1's are worth it, when i can just save up a little more and go with the 3 series. One thing is for sure, you spend enough time on here and you will find that people hardly ever regret spending more money on a better item.

I've run quite a few different shocks on our JKs, but once I added the Falcon 3.3 to our '14 two years ago I've never run another shock. Wasn't even a conversation for the wife's '18, just a given that we were putting Falcons on there.

But if your budget is $250/$300 a set, then the Rancho 5000XL perform well at that price range.

Are Falcons available for stock height?

could likely use the falcon 3.1's for stock height. or just do a budget boost and run 2.1's.

the extra travel of the 3 series will be noticed when crawling.

Yeah that's where I'm at budget wise. Probably no more than $400 for a set. Has anyone ever ran two different sets of shocks on a JK. My front ones are still in good shape but the rears are pretty much gone. I've thought about just replacing them with a set of the of the Rancho 9000 and then doing the fronts when they go. Thoughts on that and also could someone advise me on how to determine what length shocks to buy. I have shock extenders on now and would really like to remove them from the rear and go with the proper length shock.

I would recommend the Bilstein B8 5100 Series Gas Shock Kit. This is a great kit and will give you a great ride.

The RS5000X will fall within your budget with ease and then the rebate saves you a bit more.

Keep that in mind.
In fact the RS9000XL almost fall into your budget too, and then the rebate will bring it under as well.

If you are on a tight budget and think you only really need two shocks or you like the stock shock enough to keep running your current ones on the front, this is what I would do. Get some new take-off stock units from Craigslist for less than $100 for a full set. That will buy you more time to research and save for the full replacement aftermarket shock.

I probably have my stock ones from the Jeep in the garage somewhere but I'd rather not run them because they sucked pretty good.

i have had bilstein 5100's on my jeep and thought they rode ok. then one of the rear shocks blew out (less than a year BTW) bought two zone rear shocks as temporary until i could afford my falcon shocks. the zone shocks were like i was back in a one ton pickup with an empty bed, ROUGH! after putting on the falcon shocks, the ride was NIGHT AND DAY better and more controlled than the bilstein's. compared to the bilstein's, the falcon shocks control the body sway twice as good, which i believe is due to stronger rebound dampening on the falcons. for how long they lasted me and how much they cost, i wouldnt buy the bilsteins again (the original jku i looked at with bilsteins, all of them were leaking oil too).
