I have a 2004 Wrangler X 6cyl with Manual trans. The Jeep only has 17,950 miles on it.
I've been hearing a wurring sound when the clutch pedal is out. When I push the clutch in, the noise stops. Tonight I noticed the noise was slightly louder, like a wurring noise with some chatter to it. I also hear it a little when shifting between 1st and 2nd gear or when I'm backing up in reverse.
I must mention that my dad was an idiot last weekend and he started shifting the gears into 4wd WITHOUT using the clutch when the Jeep was NOT running. I caught him and it was kind of stuck in gear, so I pushed the clutch in and shifted it back into 2wd. I haven't noticed anything wrong and I don't know if that caused damage, but this has got me worried now.
I know that the throw out bearing is a definite possibility, but I'm not sure a throw out bearing should go bad with so few miles? I am not much of a mechanic other than changing oil and other fluids, batteries, etc. so changing it might not be a great idea. How much would this cost at a garage?
What else might need to be fixed, adjusted, replaced???
Thanks for all the info you can provide!
