when I bought the jeep the throwout bearing made a noise. so I decided to change the clutch pressure plate pilot bearing and release bearing. I get everything back together and the new one is noisier than the bad one. I can change the pitch of the noise by lightly touching the clutch pedal. I can't imagine that I installed it wrong... its a really simple design. any thoughts?

So it is making noise as the engine idles with your foot not on the clutch pedal? The throwout bearing only spins when you are stepping down on the clutch pedal so I probably would not suspect it at this point. Is it possible to get the clutch disk installed wrong-side out so it is rubbing against the pressure plate? I was wondering if when I last installed a clutch disk into a TJ if it was possible to accidentally reverse the clutch disk but I forgot to try it to see if that could happen.

You should have just changed the whole clutch. Could be other things causing the problem. You can get a lUK clutch for around 100 online and they work great

no I didn't install it backwards. some more food for thought. it doesn't do it all the time. generally quiet as can be when you first crank it. after it warms up it's almost certain to do it.
makes noise if you don't press the clutch pedal.
you can make it squeal by lightly pressing the pedal
goes away when you press the clutch but it doesn't have to be fully pressed.

I did. sorry I got lazy and didn't use comma's I changed clutch, pressure plate, pilot bearing, throw out bearing, rear main seal, and a few u joints.

Assuming it does it in neutral as well as in gear, it could be the input shaft bearing on the transmission. That would turn with the clutch disengaged, but would cease to turn with the clutch pushed in. If you have an automotive stethocope or even a short piece of metal pipe or tubing, lay under it and see if you can pinpoint where the noise is coming from by placing it on the front of the trans just behind the bell housing, then further up the bell housing. If it's a transmission bearing, it should be really loud right at the front of the trans case.

You can install the disc backwards however the dampner plate on the disc is raised on one side ( the side that Should face the pressure plate ) and will hit the flywheel bolts even with the clutch pedal pushed in the clutch will not release.
I'd rather not go into how I know this.
